President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has described former President John Dramani Mahama’s legacy as one characterised by persistent power outages, popularly known as 'dumsor'.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, he made these remarks during the commissioning of the Sekyere Afram Plains District Hospital at Drobonso, on November 25, 2024.

He questioned the practicality of the National Democratic Congress's (NDC) proposed 24-Hour Economy policy under Mahama's leadership.

"If he couldn’t maintain a stable 12-hour power supply when he was in office, how can he promise a 24-hour economy? Stop the lies,” he stated.

Akufo-Addo contrasted Mahama's track record with what he described as his government’s transformative policies, especially the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme.

He explained how the programme had opened doors for many young Ghanaians who, otherwise, would not have been able to continue their education due to financial challenges.

The president also shared the struggles many families faced before the policy was introduced, noting that over 1,000 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates were forced to abandon their education each year.

“For nearly a decade, this meant almost one million young people lost the chance to go to secondary school because their families couldn’t afford it,” he added.

He proudly pointed out the success of Free SHS, which he said has doubled enrollment from 800,000 to 1.6 million students, with 5.7 million beneficiaries so far.

"In other parts of the world, governments ensure young people can go to school without worrying about fees. We decided Ghana should do the same," he said, describing the policy as a game-changer for the country, the report indicated.
