Accra, June 6, GNA - Mr. Kwadwo Sarfo Kantanka, Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) in Charge of Operations, on Friday advised political parties to study and comply with the 1992 Constitution with particular reference to the electoral laws, the Political Parties Act and other operational directives of the commission.
He said organising political party activities from the ward, constituency, regional and national levels was serious business that required commitment, resources and personnel.
Mr. Kantanka was speaking during the presentation of Final Certificate to a new political party, the New Vision Party (NVP), in Accra.
He expressed concern about the large number of "dead," or "holidaying," political parties on the electoral register and said "you must work hard to avoid dropping into the political doldrums and not to be classified as a flash in the pan".
Mr. Kantanka reminded the leaders that presentation of the final certificate ended the first phase of formation of a political party and the
beginning of the actual work to build the party. The EC Commissioner said the core function of a political party was to win political power to govern the nation adding they should not just
receive the certificate and go to bed. The interim executive officers are Chairman, Apostle Aaron King;
General Secretary, Dan Enu; National Organiser, Mr Eric Lartey; Youth Organiser, Eric Amoafo; and Women Organiser, Hajia Agyara. Prophet Daniel Nkansah of the New Vision Pentecostal Church based
in Accra is the founder. Large supporters of the party and members of the church, including
pastors thronged the EC to witness the symbolic presentation of the final certificate.
Apostle King said the party cut across the Christian fraternity, stressing that it was time for the Lord to appoint a leader for the nation. He said NVP was ready to win Election 2008 "to liberate Ghanaians
and create a just society". The EC Deputy Chairman also expressed concern about an attempt by
NVP officials to play with colours in the registration of its logo and official colours. According to the EC, the interim executives, as part of the registration procedure, had presented mauve, white and yellow as its official colours with a lamp in the middle.
In contravention of the registration procedure, the EC noticed during
final check before presentation of the Final Certificate of Registration that
the party had changed the mauve to blue and the yellow to yellowish red
with a lamp in the middle. The party's slogan is "eye kanea, eye nsroma," meaning "it's Light, it's the Star."
"This is deceptive and unacceptable as it looks like the colours of an existing political party; it has the potential of creating colour confusion among the electorate," Mr Sarfo Kantanka, told the NVP interim executives.
The EC therefore ordered the NVP interim executives to correct the anomaly immediately to pave way for the presentation of the final certificate.
After two-and-a-half hours of waiting, the interim executives came back with the correct colours.
