The Chairperson of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Nabla, has taken a swipe at the two major political parties: the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of sideling women from leadership positions.

According to her, the absence of female presidential contenders within the two parties is a reflection of how women are treated internally.

“There isn’t even one woman in the NPP with the confidence or financial resilience to contest and win the presidency, and it all boils down to how women are treated in these political parties,” she said in an interview on Joy Prime TV on Tuesday, January 13, 2025.

Janet Nabla argued that women are often conditioned to play supporting roles rather than being groomed for leadership.

“Women are expected to cheer for their male counterparts, to stand while men sit, to carry benches and do all kinds of supportive tasks,” she noted.

She stated that this culture reinforces the idea that women are followers, not leaders, which is reflected in party structures.

“The party chairman is always a man, the general secretary is always a man, the national organizer is always a man. The positions given to women are usually vice positions, and a vice only becomes relevant when the substantive person is absent," Janet Nabla stated.

She stressed that this pattern cuts across the major political parties and demonstrates a failure to intentionally develop women into strong political leaders.

“These parties are not brewing their women to become leaders or a force to reckon with. When you look at presidential candidates and see five men with not even one woman among them, it speaks volumes," she added.
