A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Awal Mohammed, has clarified that although the campaign team of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia received funds from Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, during the 2023 presidential primary, the contributions were collected and distributed by Dr Acheampong, not directly from him.

This update was shared in a Facebook post by Awal Mohammed on Monday, January 19, 2025, following a viral video in which the party’s Eastern Regional Chairman, Jeff Konadu, reprimanded some Members of Parliament, including Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, claiming that Dr Bryan Acheampong supported them financially.

“Some Eastern Region MPs received money, but it was contributions from individuals that Dr Bryan Acheampong received and distributed,” the post stated.

Awal Mohammed further explained that Dr Bawumia had designated trusted representatives across Ashanti, Eastern, Central, and Northern Regions to receive and distribute campaign donations.

"In the Eastern Region, all donors were directed to Dr Bryan Acheampong, who handled the funds. The money came from Ofori-Atta, Amoako Atta, and others, plus direct transfers from the national finance director,” the post added.

Why Dr Bawumia continues to receive strong backing from NPP MPs

The comments follow claims by Dr Bryan Acheampong that he was the main financier of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign in the Eastern Region during the party’s 2023 presidential primary.
