The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has clarified that it was he and not former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who made the comments that triggered recent attacks by Kennedy Agyapong.

In a statement released to the media, Chairman Wontumi appealed to the former Assin Central MP and NPP presidential aspirant to apologise to Dr Bawumia for what he described as unwarranted and castigatory attacks against him.

Chairman Wontumi admitted that he made remarks suggesting that the late Professor Albert Adu Boahen did not contest the 1996 presidential election due to ill health.

He stressed that the comments should not have been attributed to Dr Bawumia.

He explained that the remarks were made during Dr Bawumia’s ongoing campaign tour in Ejura and Kordie and not by the former Vice President himself.

According to Chairman Wontumi, the information was shared with him by a respected elder of the party and renowned industrialist, Appiah Menka, who he said also made reference to the issue in a book he authored.

Chairman Wontumi therefore urged Kennedy Agyapong to retract his comments and issue an apology to Dr Bawumia for the insults directed at him over remarks he did not make.
