Ntim Fordjour has accused Mahama of backtracking on earlier commitments to the LGBT bill
The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over his recent comments on the passage of the LGBTQ+ bill, accusing him of backtracking on earlier commitments.
In a post shared on his X page on March 31, 2026, Ntim Fordjour questioned the silence of ecumenical bodies and civil society organisations that were vocal on LGBTQ-related matters in 2024.
“Unbelievable! Where are the ecumenical bodies and CSOs who spat fire and brimstone in 2024 over LGBTQ issues against President Akufo-Addo?” he asked.
He further accused the president and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of misleading religious leaders and the public during the election period.

“President Mahama and the NDC have relegated LGBTQ concerns to the bottom of their priority list after deceiving pastors, Muslim clerics, traditional rulers, and the entire country into thinking they would preserve our values,” he stated.
Ntim Fordjour argued that the president's current posture signals a departure from earlier assurances, describing it as a betrayal of trust.
“Today, he is distancing himself from the bill and claiming it’s no longer important… This indeed is another Mahama scam,” he added.
Meanwhile, President Mahama has called for calm and a more measured approach to the LGBTQ+ debate, emphasising the need for dialogue and national focus on more pressing challenges.
Speaking on Monday, March 30, 2026, during an engagement with civil society organisations at the Jubilee House in Accra, the president described the issue as sensitive and emotionally charged.
“It is not the most important issue we face as a nation,” Mahama stated.
He stated that Ghana must prioritise fundamental socio-economic needs affecting citizens.
“We are still grappling with the provision of basic needs of education, health care, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter,” he added.
