Former financier of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), George Oti Bonsu, has urged Ghanaians to support business-oriented individuals who seek public office, arguing that entrepreneurs are better positioned to drive job creation and national development.

Speaking at the launch of his new political movement, “The Base Movement,” in Accra on April 20, 2026, Oti Bonsu said he would personally vote for any businessman who contests an election, citing their role in reducing unemployment and social challenges.

“In this country, if any businessman stands for any election, I will vote for that person. If Ibrahim Mahama, Kennedy Agyapong, or any businessman who can provide jobs for the youth contests, that person should be supported,” he stated.

According to him, business leaders possess practical experience in wealth creation and are more likely to implement policies that directly impact livelihoods, particularly for young people.

Oti Bonsu said the newly formed Base Movement is focused on empowering the youth and offering them renewed hope.

“The Base has come for the youth. We are done with life and have nothing to gain anymore, but you are the future leaders of this country,” he said.

He subsequently called on young people to rally behind the movement.

The event marked the official unveiling of the group, which he says aims to reshape political engagement and leadership selection in Ghana.

Among key figures associated with the movement is veteran Kumawood actor Kofi Adu, popularly known as Agya Koo, who is expected to play a leading role.

The emergence of the Base Movement has already sparked speculation about possible political alignments, particularly with supporters of Kennedy Agyapong.

The former Assin Central Member of Parliament previously contested the NPP’s presidential primaries but lost to former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia in both the 2023 and 2026 races.

While Oti Bonsu did not confirm any formal affiliation, his remarks are likely to fuel further debate about the role of business leaders in Ghana’s political future.
