Tension has erupted in the Bunkpurugu Constituency of the North East Region after ballot papers and voter registers were destroyed during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) polling station executive elections, citinewsroom.com reports.

The disturbances, according to the portal, occurred on Saturday after party officials allegedly proceeded with the elections despite a 10-day restraining order issued by the High Court in Nalerigu.

The injunction was secured by Konlan Yenuyiab and 16 others, who are challenging the legitimacy of the process.

The applicants accused party officials of wrongfully disqualifying some aspirants and violating the NPP’s internal rules as well as principles of natural justice.

Court restrains NPP from conducting Bunkpurugu polling station elections

In its ruling, the court warned that allowing the elections to proceed could cause irreparable harm and render any future judgment ineffective.

However, reports indicate that despite the court order, elections were attempted at some polling centres, triggering protests by aggrieved party members.

The confrontation led to the destruction of key electoral materials, including ballot papers and voter registers.

The incident comes as the NPP rolls out its nationwide polling station executive elections, scheduled from May 10 to May 16, 2026.
