Hussein Ibrahim, Special Aide and official spokesperson for Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene, has clarified that it was never the intention of the minister’s wife to give birth abroad, insisting that a medical condition forced her to deliver their baby in the UK.

Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa TV, Hussein Ibrahim explained that about a week before the Regional Minister and his wife were due to return to Ghana from their trip abroad, she developed a condition known as placenta praevia.

According to him, doctors advised that if she attempted to fly back to Ghana, it could put her life, the life of the unborn baby, or both at risk. As a result, she had to be admitted for medical care in the UK.

The Special Aide stressed that Dr Frank Amoakohene’s wife did not leave Ghana with the initial intention of giving birth abroad.

He further noted that she is currently studying law in Ghana and writing examinations, making it unlikely that she would abandon her academic commitments simply to travel abroad to give birth.

“They travelled to the US and had about a week left before returning to Ghana when the situation arose. My boss informed me that his wife had developed a medical condition called placenta praevia and was experiencing bleeding.

“It was never their intention to travel there to give birth. The condition forced the situation. The doctors advised that it would be unsafe for her to fly back to Ghana, so they recommended that she be admitted and managed there,” he said.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, came under public criticism on June 2, 2026, after announcing the birth of his baby boy.

While many netizens congratulated him on the arrival of his son, others criticised him for having his wife give birth outside Ghana.

Some commenters said that although they admired the Regional Minister, they did not believe it was appropriate for a government official to have his child delivered abroad.

Others argued that the development highlighted existing challenges within Ghana’s healthcare system, suggesting that Dr Frank Amoakohene’s decision reflected a lack of confidence in local healthcare facilities.
