As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) begins its rebuilding process following its defeat in the 2024 general elections, the party’s 2028 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced a major restructuring of his personal office, appointing one of the party’s most experienced figures, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, as his Chief of Staff.

The former Majority Leader has been tasked with coordinating all operational activities of the Bawumia office, a position that places him at the centre of preparations towards the party’s future political strategy.

Political observers view the restructuring as an early indication of Bawumia’s plans to establish a more organised and coordinated political structure ahead of the 2028 general elections, drawing lessons from the NPP’s 2024 electoral setback.

Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, a former Member of Parliament for Suame, brings decades of parliamentary experience, extensive party networks, and deep institutional knowledge to the role.

During his 28-year parliamentary career, he served as Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Majority Leader, and Minority Leader.

On the international stage, he also served as Vice Chairman of the Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) and held a leadership role within the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

The appointment is expected to strengthen Bawumia’s organisational structure and signals his intention to maintain a clearly defined command system within his post-election political office.

The restructuring also appears to end speculation that Bawumia’s office would continue to operate as a loose and informal arrangement.

Other appointments announced include Opare Ansah as Director in charge of Identifiable Activities, Peter Mac Manu as Director in charge of Political Strategy, Fred Oware as Political Advisor, Nana Akomeah as Director in charge of Communication and Branding, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah as Director for Policy Coordination, assisted by Evon Hughes, Anthony Abayifa Karbo as Director for Organisation and Youth Inclusion, and DrEkua Amoako as Spokesperson.
