The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has wished former Member of Parliament for Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfro, Sylvester Tetteh (Sly), well as he contests for the position of General Secretary of the party, urging unity and cohesion ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Dr Bawumia made the remarks during a courtesy call by Tetteh and his campaign team, as part of his nationwide consultations with party delegates across all regions on June 28, 2026.
Addressing the delegation, Dr Bawumia stressed the importance of internal party elections, describing them as a crucial step in building a strong political structure capable of securing victory in 2028.
“2028 is really key for this party. We have to do everything to win 2028. This is part of the internal processes to build a solid structure that will take us to victory,” he said.
He noted that the ongoing internal contests at polling station, constituency, regional and national levels reflect the vibrancy of the party’s democratic culture.
According to him, the position of General Secretary is particularly important, as it serves as the administrative backbone of the party.
“The General Secretary of the party is the administrator of the party. It is a very, very important role,” he stated.
Dr Bawumia emphasised the need for unity after the internal contests, urging party members to remain focused on the ultimate goal of defeating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2028.
“Whatever the outcome, we will all come back together and go and win 2028. The real battle is against the NDC,” he said.
He further wished Tetteh success in his campaign across the remaining regions, expressing optimism about continued engagement before the national executive elections in September.
On his part, Sylvester Tetteh presented his case as a seasoned party operative with years of grassroots and parliamentary experience, arguing that he is well-positioned to serve as General Secretary.
He recounted his long-standing involvement in party politics, particularly in the Greater Accra Region, and highlighted his contributions to improving the party’s electoral fortunes in difficult constituencies.
Tetteh also stressed the need for strategic communication and stronger grassroots mobilisation, especially in opposition politics.

“In opposition, the weapon of a political party is its voice. We need a voice that will resonate across the country to ensure victory,” he said.
He further argued that diversity and regional balance in leadership roles within the party would strengthen its national appeal.
Tetteh called on delegates to support his bid, stating that his experience in party organisation, parliamentary politics, and campaign management positioned him to strengthen the NPP’s administrative structure.
He also expressed confidence that with the right leadership structure, the NPP could secure victory in the 2028 elections.
