The Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Constituency Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Asamoah, has accused the party’s acting National Chairman, Joseph Danquah Smith Butey, of blatant interference in the constituency's elections.

Chairman Asamoah alleges that Mr Butey is actively meddling in the constituency’s polling station elections to force the imposition of former Member of Parliament Alfred Obeng Boateng on the delegates. According to the chairman, this move is a deliberate effort to favour the former MP, a situation he sees as a contradiction of the rules.

"The National Executive Committee (NEC) provided us with clear directives for conducting these elections. We have successfully completed both the polling station and electoral area elections, yet Mr Butey seems determined to override our democratic processes to install Alfred Obeng Boateng," the chairman alleged.

The atmosphere in the constituency became increasingly volatile after Alfred Obeng Boateng was accused of holding a press conference at his residence to mobilise supporters against the election outcomes. Following this, Mr Boateng initiated legal action against Chairman Asamoah and several other party executives, further deepening the rift within the constituency.

The situation took a more controversial turn when the acting National Chairman, Mr Butey, allegedly summoned the Regional Chairman and all constituency executives to a meeting to discuss the already concluded electoral area coordinators' polls. Chairman Asamoah argues that this intervention is a breach of party protocol, as all electoral grievances are required to be submitted to the constituency executives for resolution within a strict 24-hour timeframe.

"The NEC convened previously and found no justifiable reasons to annul our elections. This current interference undermines the party’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms," he said.

Chairman Asamoah has warned that these manoeuvres threaten the party's internal cohesion and could severely damage the party's chances in the 2028 general elections.

"The party has confidence in its constituency executives, and we will not allow our democratic rights to be compromised," he declared, urging the national leadership to respect the will of the grassroots rather than favouring individuals who seek to bypass the established electoral process.
