'NPP does not truly love Wontumi, they are pretending' - NDC communicator alleges

A member of the NDC Communications Team, Gifty Enam Gbedivi, has questioned the sincerity of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) support for its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Bosiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi after he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Reacting to the court’s decision on UTV monitored by GhanaWeb on July 24, 2026, she alleged that the party’s public support for the Ashanti Regional Chairman does not reflect genuine concern for his situation.

“The NPP does not love Chairman Wontumi; they pretend to love him,” she said.

Enam Gbedivi said she had previously encountered Chairman Wontumi at an eatery, where she approached him and expressed concern about his appearance.

According to her, Wontumi at the time told her that his condition was linked to the legal challenges he was facing.

“I met Chairman Wontumi at an eatery, so I approached him and told him he wasn’t looking good. He said it was due to his legal challenges,” she recounted.

She further noted that Wontumi told her he had learnt from his experiences and suggested that the political environment had taught him valuable lessons.

Enam Gbedivi argued that Wontumi may have come to the realisation that he was used by some political actors for their own interests.

“He (Wontumi) said he has learnt from his experiences and that the NPP has made him learn a lot,” she stated.

She further questioned the level of support Wontumi has received from the party after his conviction, noting that although the NPP announced plans to appeal the court’s decision, there has been no clear update.

“When he was jailed, the NPP said they were going to file an appeal against the court’s decision. Up till now, we have not heard anything,” she stated.

An Accra High Court found Wontumi guilty on six counts, including the assignment of mineral rights without approval and facilitating illegal mining operations and sentenced him to 20 years in prison with hard labour.

The court's decision was based on evidence from statements, police accounts, and witness testimonies.
