The just-ended regional executive elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have produced a significant political signal in the Ashanti Region, particularly regarding the growing influence of the Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr Ayew Afriye.

The outcome, in which his people secured 8 out of the 11 regional executive positions, can reasonably be interpreted as a strong demonstration of his political influence, organizational strength and standing among party delegates in the Ashanti Region. It is an indication that Dr Ayew Afriyie has built a formidable political network that extends beyond his immediate constituency.

Dr Ayew Afriyie has, over the years, played an integral role in the NPP’s political activities, particularly across the Middle Belt and Northern Belt, contributing significantly to the party’s mobilization and campaign efforts. His influence, however, appears to have become even more pronounced in the Ashanti Region following his role in the campaign of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (DMB).

As the manager of the DMB campaign in the Ashanti Region, Dr Ayew Afriyie was at the centre of a campaign that delivered an impressive electoral performance. DMB secured victories in 45 out of the 47 constituencies in the Ashanti Region, an outcome that demonstrated the strength of the campaign’s organization and grassroots mobilization. His own constituency was also among those that delivered one of the highest percentage performances for DMB.

The latest regional executive election therefore adds another important dimension to Dr Ayew Afriye's political profile. Winning 8 of the 11 positions through people associated with his political camp is not merely an electoral statistic; it represents a measure of grassroots organization, delegate confidence and the ability to mobilize support across constituencies.

For anyone assessing the future direction of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, Dr Ayew Afriyie can no longer be treated as a peripheral figure. His contribution to party organization, his involvement in national campaign activities and his growing network among delegates have positioned him as one of the influential actors in the region’s political landscape.

Indeed, when the history of the NPP in Ghanaian politics is discussed—especially the party’s fortunes in the Ashanti Region—the name Dr Ayew Afriye will increasingly have to be mentioned. His latest electoral performance provides a clear signal that his political influence is expanding and that he has established a strong relationship with the grassroots of the party.

The regional executive elections have therefore sent a powerful message: Dr Ayew Afriye's influence in the NPP, particularly in the Ashanti Region, is significant, organized and increasingly difficult to ignore.
