Charles Asiedu defends his family’s accountable approach to politics
Charles Asiedu, the Member of Parliament for Tano South and son of National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has dismissed claims that his family is stingy, explaining that their approach to politics is rooted in accountability rather than using public office to accumulate money for distribution.
Speaking in an interview on Neat FM, Charles Asiedu said he only began to fully understand why some people describe his family as “stingy” after becoming a Member of Parliament.
He explained that, based on his experience in public office, he and his father do not believe in using positions entrusted to them by Ghanaians to obtain state resources for personal accumulation or political distribution.
“I have heard people say that my family is stingy. When I became a Member of Parliament, that was when I began to understand things properly. What I have noticed is that, in the way we go about our jobs, we simply do not know how to steal from the nation. We do not know how to use the positions entrusted to us by the citizens of this country to steal from the state and accumulate enough money to share with people,” he said.

According to the Tano South MP, his approach to public office is to ensure that every resource allocated to him is properly accounted for.
He said he has accounted for every penny in his statutory fund and questioned how he could be expected to have money available for distribution when his official income is exhausted after meeting his responsibilities.
“I have accounted for every penny in my statutory fund. If I have accounted for how I spend the money and my salary is finished, where would I get money to share with the public?” he asked.
Charles Asiedu further explained that he does not allow the pressure of future elections to influence how he performs his duties as an MP.
He said his priority is to use the four-year mandate given to him to serve his constituents, execute his responsibilities and ensure that public funds entrusted to him are properly utilised.
“I just do my job. I do not think too much about the next election. I have four years to work. I do what I can and account for it properly. Every penny is accounted for and we know where it was spent,” he stated.
Addressing similar perceptions about his father, Asiedu Nketiah, Charles said those who have described the NDC National Chairman as stingy may have formed that view from observing his political activities and his refusal to engage in practices involving the misuse of public resources.
He stressed that being unwilling to steal state resources and distribute them to people should not be interpreted as stinginess.
“So, if someone says I am stingy, or that Asiedu Nketiah is stingy, I am sure those people have monitored his political activities and seen how he conducts his politics. You do not expect us to steal money, keep it somewhere and then share it with people. It is not that he is stingy. He simply does not want to steal from the nation,” he added.
