Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, was asked to recite the national pledge during his parliamentary vetting on August 27, 2026.

The former Majority Leader was asked to recite the pledge by the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

When asked whether he was familiar with the national pledge, Mahama Ayariga affirmed that he was and urged citizens, particularly the youth, to be conversant with its words.

However, when he was asked to recite the pledge, Ayariga initially asked the MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to recite it first so he could follow afterwards, citing Afenyo-Markin’s younger age.

“I am supposed to be familiar with it, and you are also familiar with it, so we will recite it together. But since you are younger, you can start reciting the pledge, after which I will also recite it,” he said.

The Minister-designate later recited the pledge, prompting Afenyo-Markin to question why he had done so at such speed.

Meanwhile, Parliament has approved the nomination of Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs following his parliamentary vetting.
