Samuel Amankwaa positions himself for NPP Ayawaso West Wuogon primary

Samuel Owusu Amankwaa is emerging as one of the names being considered within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the party seeks to reclaim the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat.

Amankwaa, a businessman and politician, has previously contested the NPP parliamentary primary in the constituency and has continued to engage with party members.

The NPP lost the seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general election, with the party’s candidate, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, polling 27,377 votes against John Setor Dumelo’s 40,561 votes.

Dumelo won by a margin of 13,184 votes and remains the incumbent Member of Parliament for the constituency.

The 2024 result has increased the focus within the NPP on its choice of candidate for the next parliamentary election, particularly on the ability of the candidate to narrow the gap recorded in the previous election.

Supporters of Amankwaa point to his previous experience in the constituency as an advantage, arguing that he understands the party’s delegates and the political dynamics of the area.

“He has been through this process before. He understands the constituency, he understands the delegates and, importantly, he understands what has to change if the NPP is to regain the seat,” a party source familiar with the constituency said.

His supporters have also highlighted what they describe as his focus on party organisation, visibility and reconnecting with voters.

The NPP is expected to face a competitive process in selecting its candidate, with the party seeking to improve its performance in the constituency after the 2024 defeat.
