Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Dome-Kwabenya, Mike Oquaye Jr, has expressed confidence in his chances of winning the constituency seat in the 2028 general elections following former Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo's declaration of her intention to contest the party's upcoming parliamentary primaries.
According to him, the NPP's defeat in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency during the 2024 general elections was not a result of dissatisfaction with his candidature but rather voter apathy and anger over other issues.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM's Kokrokoo programme on Friday, October 23, 2026, Oquaye Jr explained that thousands of voters who previously supported the NPP stayed away from the polls in 2024 due to frustration.
He noted that although the constituency's voter register increased by approximately 10,000 voters between the 2020 and 2024 general elections, the party failed to translate the increase into electoral support.
According to him, the NPP secured about 52,000 votes in the constituency during the 2020 elections, but the political dynamics changed significantly in 2024.
He further claimed that about 28,000 registered voters abstained from voting in the 2024 elections because of anger and dissatisfaction, rather than opposition to him personally.

Oquaye Jr maintained that even the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which won the parliamentary seat, experienced a reduction in its votes, suggesting that voter apathy affected both major political parties.
He expressed optimism that the voters who stayed away from the polls would return in 2028 and throw their support behind him if he gets another opportunity to represent the NPP.
“The NDC secured 50,000 votes in the election, but their votes also reduced. Due to voter apathy and anger, about 28,000 people stayed home and did not vote for either the NDC or the NPP. I believe that in 2028, all those people will come out and vote for me.
“So, it was not because the constituents were angry with me personally. They were angry about other issues, and I believe that in 2028, they will come out and vote for me,” he said.
His comments come after former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo announced her intention to contest the NPP's upcoming parliamentary primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Adwoa Safo, who previously represented the constituency in Parliament, lost the NPP's parliamentary primary to Oquaye Jr ahead of the 2024 elections.
However, Oquaye Jr subsequently lost the parliamentary election to the NDC candidate, bringing an end to the NPP's long-standing hold on the Dome-Kwabenya seat.
