Persistent power outages in the Ashanti Region could undermine public confidence in President John Dramani Mahama’s government if urgent steps are not taken to restore a stable electricity supply, Abdul Rasheed, Deputy Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Nwabiagya South Constituency, has warned.

Rasheed has urged the government and key players in the energy sector to act swiftly to address the disruptions, cautioning that the political consequences of the situation could be significant if residents and businesses continue to endure unreliable power supply.

According to him, the growing concerns over dumsor risk weakening the government’s credibility, particularly as residents expect improvements in public services and living conditions.

He stressed that reliable electricity remains essential to economic activity, with small-scale businesses among those most vulnerable to frequent power interruptions.

Artisans, cold-store operators, food vendors and other small business owners depend heavily on electricity to operate equipment, preserve perishable goods and provide services. Unstable power supply can disrupt their operations, increase operating costs and threaten their livelihoods.

Rasheed warned that the economic impact of the outages should not be separated from their political implications, arguing that the government’s response to the situation could influence how residents assess its performance.

He has therefore called on the Ministry of Energy, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and other relevant agencies to intensify efforts to identify the causes of the outages and implement lasting solutions.

The NDC officer also urged the authorities to improve communication with affected consumers by providing clear information on the causes of power interruptions and the measures being taken to restore stable supply.

He maintained that resolving the situation was necessary not only to protect businesses and livelihoods but also to preserve public confidence in the Mahama administration.

Rasheed wants the government to treat the concerns with urgency and ensure that households, businesses and institutions in the Ashanti Region can depend on a reliable electricity supply.
