Fifi Fiavi Kwetey is the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has alleged that pressure from within his own party to manufacture scandals against the then-governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) contributed to his decision to resign as a parliamentary ranking member.
He said some party members expected him to find wrongdoing in the NPP at all costs, even when there was no genuine basis for such allegations.
According to a report by myjoyonline.com on November 4, 2026, Fifi Kwetey recalled that the pressure became particularly difficult after the NDC lost the 2016 general elections.
“One of the reasons why I quit the position as a ranking member was because I simply could not understand the expectation from my own corner that I must find scandal on NPP at all costs,” he stated.
He said he was unwilling to compromise his principles by pursuing allegations to satisfy political expectations, insisting that his criticism of the opposition must be based on established wrongdoing.
“I'm not going to be fishing for scandal for the sake of it. I said no, I'm not doing it. That's me. If there's something genuinely wrong with NPP, I will speak,” he indicated.
Fifi Kwetey further alleged that the expectations went beyond aggressive scrutiny, with some people wanting him to create scandals even when none existed.
“But in this situation, I must find scandal at all costs. If there is none, I must manufacture one,” he stated.
'I don't worry about pleasing government officials' - Fifi Kwetey
He cited the experience to question the NPP's current campaign against the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, over the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa.
The NPP youth wing staged a demonstration in Accra on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, demanding accountability over an alleged GH¢16.4 million discrepancy in expenditure on the evacuation exercise.
The protesters called for the refund of the alleged amount, the release of flight invoices and beneficiary records, and an independent audit of the expenditure.
The controversy centres on the evacuation of 1,964 Ghanaians, with the Minority questioning payment records and alleging that some beneficiaries received less than they were entitled to.
However, Ablakwa has denied any wrongdoing and invited the Auditor-General to audit the expenditure.
Fifi Kwetey dismissed concerns about signatures and duplicate entries in documents submitted by the ministry, arguing that the NPP's criticism was an attempt to discredit the Foreign Affairs Minister.
He challenged the opposition to provide evidence that Ablakwa had stolen public funds.
“What have you been able to establish against the Foreign Minister that was stolen? What? How much money? You can't prove one,” he said.
