The Volta region’s allegiance to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is as a result of the fact that, founder of the party, former President Jerry John Rawlings hails from the region, and the NDC can only return to power if he joins in the campaign against 2020 elections,” flagbearer hopeful Dr. Spio Garbrah has cautioned the largest opposition NDC.
Speaking on Kasapa Fm, Dr. Spio Garbrah expressed confidence the party is capable of returning to power after the 2020 polls but not without the support of the first president under the fourth republic.
He noted that, Mr. Rawlings’ absence during the 2016 elections significantly contributed to the party’s defeat, adding that the dwindling number of votes from the region in the last election is an indication of the influence the latter wields in the enclave.
“During the time of Rawlings, the party gets more than 90 percent of the votes from the Volta region. Late Professor Mills got about 80 percent of the votes and during that time, Rawlings was very much involved in the campaign. In the last election, the vote dropped to about 70 percent during Mahama’s time.”
“This is a clear indication that, the region’s allegiance is to Rawlings and not anyone. So no matter who the party presents, if the person has the support of Rawlings, they will vote massively for him” he said.
Meanwhile, he has urged delegates to have confidence in his candidature by massively voting for him in the upcoming flagbearership race in December this year.
He said:“I’m incorruptible and have never been tagged with any corrupt act, I know it is my time and everywhere I go people tell me it is actually my time to be president”.
