Captain Ibrahim Traore’s rise to power in Burkina Faso on September 30, 2022, marked a significant shift in the country’s leadership. At 34, Traore became the world’s youngest serving head of state. But what drove this coup, and what are Traore’s plans for Burkina Faso?

Reasons for the Coup

Traore and other officers were dissatisfied with interim president Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba’s inability to contain the jihadist insurgency and his perceived personal ambitions. About one-third of Burkina Faso is under Islamist militant control, linked to Al-Quaeda. Delays in pay for the ‘Cobra’ groups further fueled dissatisfaction.

Vision for Burkina Faso

Traore seeks true political and economic emancipation for the Burkinabe people, aiming to stop colonial manipulation and domination. Initially promising democratic elections in July 2024, he later extended military rule by five years. Traore plans to reconquer rebel-held areas, strengthen the military, and capitalize on Burkina Faso’s gold resources by refining gold domestically. He also vows to tackle pervasive corruption.

Challenges Faced

Traore faces ongoing jihadist attacks and criticism for alleged ties to the Russian mercenary organization Wagner Group. Expelling French forces and seeking bilateral ties with Russia,Turkey, and North Korea has sparked Western concern.

Achievements

Some notable achievements under Traore’s leadership include:

. Approving the construction of Burkina Faso’s first gold refinery

. Inaugurating a mine tailings treatment plant to improve resource recovery and environmental practices

. Suspending export permits for small-scale private gold production to tackle illicit trade

. Constructing a satellite facility to monitor enemies and improve agriculture

. Building roads and bridges to promote economic growth

Shortcomings

Traore’s presidency has been marked by:

1. Extended military rule

2. Alleged ties to Russian mercenary groups

3. Proposing to criminalize homosexuality

4. Censorship of the press and alleged conscription of journalists into the military

The Way Forward

Traore is undoubtedly a transformative leader who wants the best for the Burkina people. To succeed, he should:

. Ensure press freedom from censorship

. Work towards national unification

. Collaborate to stem cross-border crimes and jihadist expansion

By addressing these challenges, Traore can solidify his vision for a prosperous Burkina Faso.

A luta Continua!
