He was also skeptical about the future of his unholy matrimony with one of his aides at the VRA, telling me in surprisingly humble tones that Joyce will “laugh” at him. In fact, he tried to take advantage of our longstanding friendship to insist that if I do not find him a job he won’t stand down. “J. A., you know I have sent my party on leave and the donors have almost forgotten about me. What do you expect me to do with my life when I step down?” he asked me. I told him I didn’t care a hoot.
