March 8th is celebrated every year as International Women’s Day, as designated by the United Nations.

Over the years, women have played and continue to play crucial roles in our national development and daily lives. Women like Yaa Asantewaa, and Madam Theodosia Okoh, blazed the trail.

Today, the fourth highest office in the land is held by a woman, her Ladyship Georgina Theodora Wood; the Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament is a woman, Hon Adwoa Safo, while the Electoral Commission’s Chairperson is also a woman, Mad Charlotte Osei.

For the first time in Ghana’s history the Chief of Staff is a woman, Mrs Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, while Ambassador Mercy Yvonne Debrah-Karikari is the first ever femaleSecretary to the Cabinet.

As well, three of Ghana’s five major telecom companies are headed by women - Yolanda Zoleka Cuba (Vodafone), Lucy Quist (Airtel) and Roshi Motman (Tigo).

In politics, religion, academia, and every other sphere of human endeavour, Ghanaian women continue to make remarkable strides both home and abroad. The women who farm and toil each day, including the kayayei should not be forgotten. We thank you all.

On this International Women’s Day I wish to salute you all, especially my mother and lovely wife Samira, I say Ayekoo!

Ghana is proud of you.
