Commey is on the verge of making history tonight
Professor Azumah Nelson is undoubtedly the greatest fighter to have emerged from Ghana.
He has earned his status as one of Africa’s Greats, but his compatriot, Richard Commey (24-0, 22 KOs) is on the brink of achieving what Azumah could not, against Pernell ‘Sweet Pea’ Whitaker when they fought for the WBC & IBF World Lightweight titles in 1990s.
The young Ghanaian will take on American Robert Easter Jnr (17-0, 14KOs) for the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) Lightweight title at the Santander Arena, Pennsylvania on Friday, September 11, 2016.
Prior to Azumah’s bout with Whitaker, Salvador Sánchez was the only boxer to have beaten Azumah in his entire career but Whitaker proved that he was the ruler of the WBC and IBF category at that time after a unanimous decision win .
All that stands in Commey’s way would be his hard-hitting , unbeaten American opponent, Easter Jr., who is looking to stamp his mark on the Lightweight division especially after an impressive outing against Argenis Mendez in a 5-round Knock down.
Most Ghanaian boxing fans would be praying very hard for this young man – as he has proven over the period that he is a man for big occasions – to win Ghana a world title after Joseph Agbeko lost his IBF and WBC Silver Bantamweight titles to Mexican boxer, Abner Mares in 2013.
