INTER-SECTORAL COMMITTEE ON AGED TO BE SET UP

The government is to set up a National Inter-Sectoral Committee under the auspices of the Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare to draft a comprehensive ageing policy aimed at protecting the interests of the elderly and the aged. This was disclosed by the Executive Director of Help Age Ghana, Mr.. J. D. Mensah, at Dunkwa-On-Offin, at the inauguration of the Club for the Aged and Disabled in Rural Environs, (CADRE), a non-governmental organisation set up to improve the welfare of the aged in the Upper Denkyira District. Mr.. Mensah said the government has also set aside the First of July every year, as a National Senior Citizen's Day in recognition of the contributions of the aged to society, during their youthful days. It is also to motivate society to be more disposed towards the welfare of the aged. A message read on behalf of the Indian high Commissioner to Ghana, Mr.. Diljit Singh Pannum, commended the ideals of the club towards the aged in society, and expressed the High Commission's preparedness to support its programmes. End
