As Director of Research and Elections, NPP South Africa, a lecturer and policy artivist. Let me shine more light on NPP’s policy on youth development in Ghana post-2024 elections.

The youth of Ghana are the heartbeat of our nation, brimming with creativity, ambition, and the relentless drive to shape a brighter future. As the largest demographic group, they hold the key to unlocking Ghana’s full potential.

However, to harness this potential, it is imperative that we empower them with the skills, opportunities, and environment necessary for success as designed by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, our flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and NPP. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) recognizes this vital need and has placed youth empowerment and job creation at the core of its agenda.

A Vision for the Future: Empowering the Youth for Sustainable Development:

NPP’s commitment to youth empowerment is grounded in the belief that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow but also the driving force of today. By equipping them with the right tools and creating avenues for meaningful employment, we are investing in the long-term prosperity of our nation. Our vision is clear: to build a Ghana where every young person has the opportunity to pursue their dreams, contribute to society, and secure a dignified livelihood.

Innovative Programs for Job Creation and Skills Development:

NPP’s initiatives are not just about creating jobs—they are about creating quality, sustainable jobs that align with the evolving demands of the global market. Key programs include:

Youth Employment Agency (YEA): The YEA has been instrumental in providing

job placements and training for thousands of young Ghanaians across various sectors. By partnering with the private sector, YEA aims to bridge the skills gap and ensure that young people are equipped with relevant, in-demand skills.

Nation Builders Corps (NaBCo): Launched to address the pressing issue of graduate unemployment, NaBCo provides young graduates with work experience, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. Over 100,000 young people have benefited from NaBCo, gaining practical skills that enhance their employability in the job market.

One District, One Factory (1D1F): This flagship initiative is transforming local economies and creating job opportunities for the youth by promoting industrialization at the district level. The 1D1F program not only creates direct employment but also fosters entrepreneurship, encouraging young people to start and manage their own businesses.

Promoting Entrepreneurship and Innovation:

Recognizing the transformative power of entrepreneurship, the NPP has introduced several policies aimed at nurturing young entrepreneurs and fostering a culture of innovation:

NEIP (National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme): NEIP provides

financial support, business advisory services, and training for young entrepreneurs. By removing the barriers to starting a business, NEIP is empowering the next generation of business leaders who are not just job seekers but job creators.

Digital Skills Training: In response to the global shift towards digital economies, the NPP has launched various digital skills programs, including coding classes, data science training, and tech incubators. These initiatives are designed to prepare the youth for opportunities in technology-driven industries, positioning Ghana as a hub for digital innovation in Africa.

Expanding Access to Technical and Vocational Education (TVET):

The NPP’s emphasis on TVET is part of a broader strategy to diversify the skills base of the youth and reduce the over-reliance on traditional academic pathways. Key interventions include:

Modernizing TVET Institutions: Investments have been made in upgrading

facilities, providing modern equipment, and updating curricula to reflect industry standards. This ensures that TVET graduates are well-prepared for the job market.

Free TVET and Apprenticeship Programs: By making TVET more accessible, the NPP is encouraging more young people to pursue skills-based education.

Apprenticeship programs are also being expanded, providing hands-on experience and direct entry into various trades. Furthermore, TVET colleges/universities will be established in some regions according to Agenda 111, making them more accessible to the youth.

Financial Support and Access to Capital:

Access to finance is one of the most significant barriers faced by young entrepreneurs. The NPP’s approach includes:

Youth Enterprise Support Funds: Dedicated funds have been established to provide low-interest loans and grants to young entrepreneurs. This financial support is crucial in helping young businesses grow, scale, and create more jobs.

Incentives for Youth-Led Startups: Tax incentives and reduced regulatory burdens for startups create a more conducive environment for young entrepreneurs to thrive.

Building a Future of Opportunities for All:

The NPP’s commitment to youth empowerment extends beyond job creation; it’s about creating a society where every young person feels valued and supported. By investing in education, promoting skills development, and fostering an entrepreneurial spirit, we are building a resilient youth that will lead Ghana into a prosperous future.

The journey ahead requires bold leadership, innovative thinking, and a collective effort to remove the barriers that stand in the way of our youth. The NPP believes in the potential of every young Ghanaian and remains steadfast in its mission to create an environment where dreams can flourish and possibilities are endless.

A Call to Action: Building Together:

The NPP invites all young people, industry leaders, and communities to join hands in this transformative journey. Together, we can build a Ghana where every young person has the chance to succeed. With the right leadership and the right opportunities, there is no limit to what we can achieve.
