As Ghana gears up for the upcoming elections on December 7, 2024, I’m sharing my observations and predictions based on my experience as a media practitioner and a keen observer of the nation’s political landscape.
Election Details
• Date: December 7, 2024
• Main Presidential Candidates:
• Mahamudu Bawumia (NPP – “Upgrade”)
• John Mahama (NDC – “Reset”)
Possible Outcomes
1. NPP Win: Likely with a small margin, potentially leading to a runoff.
2. NDC Win: A one-touch victory with a significant margin, avoiding a runoff.
3. Runoff Scenario:
• Smaller parties, like the “Butterfly Party,” may align with the NDC, while others may side with the NPP.
• The Butterfly Party is expected to impact negatively the NPP in the Ashanti Region, particularly in Kumasi.
• Voter turnout in the Ashanti Region will be a critical determinant in shaping the overall results.
Parliamentary Elections
• The NDC is projected to win a slight majority of parliamentary seats.
• Regional Performance:
• The NPP is expected to perform well in the Eastern and Ashanti regions.
• The NDC is likely to dominate in majority of the other regions.
Strategic Observations
• The NPP can secure a victory by excelling in just three key regions due to Ghana’s unitary political system.
• If Ghana operated under a federal system, parties would require a specific percentage of votes in all 16 regions to win, making the dynamics drastically different.
Electoral Commission Preparations
• Voting Stations: 38,622
• Polling Stations: 33,367
• Registered Voters: Approximately 18 million
Advice to Voters
1. Choose peace over violence—elections should unify, not divide.
2. Remember, freedom is not free—exercise your right to vote and ensure your vote is counted.
3. Resolve any disputes at the polling station, and pursue legal recourse only when necessary.
Ultimately, the outcome lies in the hands of the voters—the good people of Ghana—and in God, who appoints leaders according to His purpose.
God bless our motherland, Ghana. May we remain a great and strong nation.
