The Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, has visited Ghana’s national women soccer team, the Black Queens, at their camp in the United States, to boost their morale ahead of the 2003 Women’s World Cup.
The minister, who is on an official visit to the U. S, assured the team of the nation’s support and urged it to hold high the flag of Ghana and the entire African continent.
The Minister visited the team in the company of officials from the Ghana’s embassy to the U. S. The embassy, in collaboration with the sports ministry, appealed to all Ghanaians to contribute in cash or kind towards the upkeep of the team.
The competition starts tomorrow and the Black Queens, grouped with China, Australia and Russia, play their first match against China on Sunday at Carson, Los Angeles. According to reports, the team was in high spirits when the minister and his entourage visited. They qualified for the competition alongside Nigeria from Africa, and have camped in Portland, Oregon, in the U. S. over the past six weeks.
During the minister’s visit, they demonstrated a sense of battle-readiness, and spoke well of their determination to make an impact in the tournament.
