The Case for Change

In November / December 2008 Ghanaians will walk to the polls in an effort to change Ghana’s direction. Groups such as Ghanaians for Mills (GFM) have vowed to play a key role in ensuring that the elections are free and transparent. Prior to signing up any new members, the group consisting of mainly the Youth between the ages of eighteen and thirty five years encourages new applicants to sign an agreement to invest no less than eight hours at a polling station in Ghana. This gesture seeks to ensure fairness and transparency while ensuring the votes are counted accurately. Also included in the agreement is a signed assurance that members will register to vote and will indeed vote in December 2008.

Although Ghanaians for Mills (GFM) began as a small group of Ghanaians interested in ensuring Ghana gets back on the right track, it has grown from a group of ten from day one, to a group of one hundred and fifty individuals in its second month. It is the charter’s desire to increase the base to over two thousand individuals before the 2008 elections. Members are made aware that the group’s views do not represent the Mills campaign, and it operates on the basis of getting Ghana back on the right track.

Prior to forming the organization, the originators of the idea debated extensively on who among the two front runners for the high office of President of Ghana, Professor John Evans Atta Mills and Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo would present better leadership and a change in the right direction that Ghana so desperately needs.

The group’s consensus at the end of the constructive debate was while Nana Akuffo-Addo of the ruling elite NPP was bound to present more of what we have had from the NPP for the past eight years, Professor John Evans Atta Mills of the NDC was positioned to provide Ghana with new leadership and change for the better. NPP’s Failed Promises

When the NPP was in the opposition, trying to get their hands on power, their tone was much different. The leader of the NPP at the time, His Excellency President John Agyekum Kuffour, tailored his message around promises and guarantees.

The President, with all due respect, did a remarkable job in his very first year in office. His message of uniting the country was taken to the Osu Castle, immediately after his inauguration. He backed great NDC minds like Dr. Ibn Chambas as the ECOWAS Executive Secretary and appointed Dr. Paa Kwasi Ndoum of the CPP as a Minister of State. Though he started well, after the first year of his first term, our President lost his bearing.
