The power of choice is indeed a wonderful privilege to have, but with it comes an enormous responsibility, because every choice has its own consequence which determines whether the choice was properly made or not. Those with an innate understanding of a consequence refuse therefore to choose, because they already know what the outcome of a choice would be and such men/women are mostly called visionaries.
When Dr Nkrumah decided after a careful deliberation, that Ghana with both her multi-ethnicity and tribes would be better served under a one party system, many objected to this idea as something undemocratic. Because to these individuals who objected, democracy meant multipartyism, however little did they understood that multipartyism in multi-ethnic country like Ghana, if not careful, could lead to civil unrest or war, especially if these various ethnic tribes and groups are divided by ethnic status, due to wealth and power. So to prevent the country from such an undesirable fate, it would be best if the country didn't vote at all. But instead of voting opt for a government which would prioritize the collective interests of all the citizens of Ghana, irrespective of either ethnic background or tribe. But once again, this move by Dr Nkrumah was misconstrued by the so called democrats as something dictatorial, hence the collaboration of the United States government and the traitor sergeant Afrifa and his cohorts, which ousted Nkrumah's government.
But then you ask, why would the United States, the mother of the democracy and the shining example of why democracy matters, collaborate with a coupist to ouster a democratically elected president? Well the answer is this, it's because the United States is and was never a true believer of democracy, let alone be considered a democratic country. The United States is an opportunistic imperialistic regime which talks the talk of democracy, but doesn't quite walk the talk and the same could be said about great Britain. Because mind you, there was never a talk of any free and fair election all the time that Ghana was considered a British protectorate and why is that? America calls herself the land of the free and home of the brave, however her freedom hasn't yet taught her to respect the properties of other sovereignties by leaving them alone.
When and if America has a special interest in a sovereign country, she would apply all necessary means to have and keep that particular interest, even it means applying illegal and undemocratic tactics like murder, intimidation, invasion, coup, assassination attempts and bullshit to achieve it. And should America by chance or fate, fail to get what she went for in sovereign country, then hell breaks loose for that sovereignty. Because not only would America destroy the economy of that particular sovereignty by placing embargoes and the likes on that sovereignty, but the leader of that sovereignty would also be painted as a dictator. We all could ask Robert Mugabe, the late Saddam Hussein, Noriega, Castro and many more of the these leaders and ex leaders who have seen that not only is America a hypocrite, but also a God-damned liar.
By the way, the reason why the United States participated in the 1966 coup was to halt the socialist ideology, which the influential Dr Nkrumah was pursuing from spreading across the African continent, moreover the United States recognized that should socialism succeed in Africa, America would lose her imperialistic grip and overall interests on the African continent to the former Soviet Union, hence the coup. Therefore it should be safe to conclude that, the United States involvement in toppling our first democratically elected president, had nothing whatsoever to do with the best interests of Ghana or indeed her people, but rather to serve the selfish interests of imperialistic America.
Today Ghana's multipartyism, more than anything else is ethnically driven and centred, the people vote for political party's which they have either a tribal or ethnic affiliation, and this type of voting could never have the best interests of the country at heart. Because it promotes unnecessary ethnic illusion of power of one ethnic group over the other. For instance, we all do know that most supporters affiliated with the NDC party are mostly non Akans, whilst most Akans tend to vote for the NPP party. This trend, should it continue, could lead us into civil war one day. And all because this form of ethnic division, if flamed by politics could dump the country into an inferno. Hence the need for the coalition of all the various political party's in Ghana under One absolute party, which would prioritize the best interests of every child of Ghana. Because really, a people divided are more or less defeated. And as for democracy, let the White people who invented it, keep to themselves, if it serves them well.
