Is the Head of Electoral Commission Serious at All?

Sun, 4 Oct 2015 Source: Adofo, Rockson

I am completely dumbfounded by the obstinacy of the Chair of Ghana's Electoral Commission, Ms Charlotte Osei. She wants to behave same as, if not worse than, her predecessor, that shameless retired septuagenarian, Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan. She does not realise the importance of the independence of her department that obligates her and her Electoral Commission to be decoupled from partisan politics. The fact that President Mahama, the number one member of the NDC party appointed her to the office of Head of Ghana's Electoral Commission, does not compel her in any way to do the bidding of only the NDC regardless how ridiculous it may be.

From her dismal attitude so far shown, intransigent as it appears, she is deeply embedded in polarized politics. She tips lopsidedly in favour of the NDC and President Mahama hence her snobbish arrogant attitude that is devoid of fairness and common sense.

Let me remonstrate with her about the irregularities in the current voters register. It has been proved that the register is not only bloated, but also, pregnant to the extreme with names of foreigners who have no right to exercise any franchise in Ghana. Most of these foreigners only produced National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration cards as their form of identity that permitted them to register onto the voters register. However, NHIS cards are not national ID cards and cannot be accepted as a proof of ones Ghanaian nationality. Why can't such a register teeming with irregularities be changed for a more credible one that will be acceptable to all discerning Ghanaians to come in place?

What really pisses me off is when Akans or Akan-bearing-named persons allow themselves to be manipulated by the NDC government to behave so irresponsibly. Kwadwo Afari Gyan for reasons best known to him, very likely to be bordering on stupidity and the fact of walking with his stomach, allowed the NDC to manipulate him to rig the 2012 elections in their favour. Nobody can change my views and stance on the fact that the election was rigged. All his nonsensical explanations, definitions and arguments on live telecast during the Supreme Court's adjudication of the 2012 Election petition gave him away.

Ms Charlotte Osei from the little I have observed about her is resolutely determined to follow that absurd, corrupt and biased path paved by her predecessor, Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan. What is wrong with these Akans who for what they will acquire; selfish as they are, do not give two hoots what will become of the rest of their tribesmen?

I do not want to sound tribal here but I can honestly not stand the folly of some of these insatiably greedy Akans who as myopic as they appear allow their stomach and heart, instead of their head, to dictate to them. Look at Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the "yen ntie obiaa" fantasist, how he has contributed to forcing Ghana to her knees. If he had not involved himself in the perceived underhand deals, corrupting some Supreme Court judges who in the face of compelling credible evidence, still ruled against the truth, thereby compromising their integrity and the ethics of the law profession, Ghana will today be standing tall but not kneeling. What is wrong with these AKANS at all, underrating their intelligence just because of their silly quest for material wealth and power? Money cannot purchase them happiness. It is unfortunately only in Ghana or Africa that money commands respect.

I will expect the Head of the Electoral Commission to ensure that a credible voters register acceptable to discerning people who wish the best for all Ghanaians but not only for a few selfish power-drunk individuals is ready for the impending 2016 elections.

Sensible Ghanaians will like to see that people they really vote to elect do represent them as President and Members of Parliament (MPs) but not those who aspire through dubious means – bloated register of course – to get elected.

I shall be back with further questions-laden publications on this ongoing quest for credible new voters register. I shall not spare the rod to spoil Ms Charlotte Osei if she becomes so determined to veer off the path of wisdom.

"It does not belong to he who is leading to redirect their steps" hence this publication to Ms Charlotte Osei.
