Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier says he was surprised by Newcastoe United manager Rafael Benitez' substitutions during their 3-0 defeat to West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday.
With Newcastle down by a lone goal against the Hammers, Benitez opted to bring on Christian Atsu for Matt Ritchie, who was seen fuming at the decision. Eventually, the substitution didn't pay off as Newcastle conceded two additional goals.
"Atsu came on quite early on against West Ham on Saturday. I was really surprised at that substitution," Le Tissier told Sky Sports.
"I think it was still 1-0 at the time when he took Matt Ritchie off, and Matt Ritchie was fuming. He'd played quite a big part in that first half in creating chances for people. His delivery into the box is very, very good and I can certainly understand his frustrations," he added.
Atsu has made eight league appearances so far this season including one start. He is, however, expected to start against Everton on Wednesday as Ritchie is suspended due to accumulated cards.
