Mills: “Asomdweehene” or Deadly Snake Under Grass?

Sat, 11 Sep 2010 Source: NPP

President Mills and his deceptive NDC fooled Ghanaians with a persona of peace loving, caring image that helped to catapult him into power in 2008. Since he assumed power President Mills has consistently revealed his true self to Ghanaians that is contrary to what many Ghanaians pictured him to be.

President Mills has proven to be a lover of violence. Under his reign, political violence has assumed a new dimension that is threatening Ghana’s young democracy. All the three by-elections conducted under his presidency have been characterized by terrorist acts, organized and executed by his ruling NDC Party. This NDC terrorism sanctioned by the President threatens to push Ghana to the corridors of the other strive-torn countries in Africa.

The first by-election held under President Mills is the Akwatia election. Prior to the by-election, the Eastern Regional Minister, Baba Jamal in an Al Quiada fashion declared jihad or “holy war” on the opposition NPP that resulted in smashing of cars, maiming and bloodshed of innocent Ghanaians who wanted to exercise their franchise. President Mills did not condemn the violence nor sanctioned the minister in any way. In the end NDC lost the by-election.

The second by-election held under President Mills is the Chreponi election. Known NDC thugs in a broad day light opened gun fire on NPP supporters in the presence of heavily armed law enforcing personnel who stood paralyzed while innocent civilians they are trained to protect were being brutalized. One visiting NPP stalwart, Dr. Kwame Frimpong-Boateng had to perform impromptu surgery at the local hospital because the physicians were overwhelmed at the emergency ward.

Recently during the Atiwa by election, which is the third organized under President Mills, the NDC thugs again visited naked and savage terrorism on the citizenry. The NDC women organizer is reported to have driven her vehicle into a crowd of NPP supporters nearly killing four innocent people, yet nothing happened to her or the other perpetrators of violence. Sadly, when President Mills returned from one of his futile trips abroad, instead of assuaging the emotions of the country, or as he is wont to do, appoint a committee to look into this growing cancer, he adds fuel to the fire by declaring as follows, “we will meet NPP boot for boot”. Is this an utterance from a peace- loving president?

To the uninitiated, this will sound as an odd remark from a frustrated president who is fast losing his grip on the presidency, and who has lost another by-election; but those who know President Mills as the deadly snake under grass, it is consistent with who he truly is – a hypocrite who promotes violence secretly and pretends to be against violence in public. Only this time, he is not even pretending anymore.

A careful look at the Atta Mills Presidency will give Ghanaians some clues as to who really he is. He has presided over lawlessness than any of our civilian Presidents. As soon as he came to office, the NDC cadres calling themselves foot soldiers started seizing people’s properties including public toilets, chasing other Ghanaians of different political persuasions from government offices and from their jobs. Murderers running away from persecution found under NDC minister’s bed faced no prosecution – and not only did that minister face any obstruction of justice charges, he still has his job..

The sad irony of Professor Mills’ presidency is the apparent contradiction in the person of Mills. A law professor who is presiding over lawlessness and near anarchy. A man who cherishes to be seen as peace loving and yet presiding over violence. The recent display of arrogance of power and snobbery at the just concluded festival at Cape Coast is the true picture of Mills. He is snobbish, arrogant and a conceited man who cannot entertain those who oppose him. When in opposition, the then candidate Mills had wanted even to share the podium with the former president Kufour. This same snake under grass Mills does not want to recognize his political opponent, Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo Addo. Is this a man of humility, as the NDC propaganda machine wants us to believe?

Another contradiction in Mills is a communist who wants to be seen in the West as a democrat. A former student of Kwame Nkrumah’s ideological institute, the communist instinct in Mills comes out through his anti American investment policies. Yet whenever he needs medical treatment he goes to the West, never to Russia or the former Eastern block nations. When he returns he hypocritically pontificates that he has confidence in Ghanaian doctors.

Fellow Ghanaians, there is a method to the madness call the Mills’ Presidency. Gradually President Mills’s sheepskin is coming off and very soon Ghanaians will see the wolf underneath those sheep’s clothing. When the truth finally comes out and people see President Mills well, then we all can judge if he is indeed a king of peace “Asomdweehene” or a deadly snake under grass.
