Observations about Doya, GFA and Ghanaians

Sat, 6 May 2006 Source: Amoesi, Kweku

1. Doya has felled some big trees in the past. So it is not beyond him to mastermind the hacking down of Italy like Hiddink did with South Korea

2. Ghanaians believe Doya single-handedly qualified Ghana for the WC. He himself also believes that.

3. That both Doya and Ghanaians are lucky to be at the wolrd cup in not in doubt. Ghana qualified from a group in which the strongest opponent was a weak South African team that was walloped 3-0 by Burkina and could not score a single goal or even point at Can 2006.

4. Majority of Ghanaians surprisingly expected the Black Stars to do well at CAN 2006 inspite of the woeful selection and inadequate preparations.

5. Majority of Ghanaians are hoping against all odds that the Black Stars would be a small axe against a big tree. They do not know wishes are not horses. 6. Doya holds or rather exhibits a defeatist attitude and tells Ghanaians not to expect anything because its our first time at the WC.

The question is; if Guus Hiddink had thought that way could he have beaten Italy and reached the semis with an unknown squad?

7. Looks more like Doya has regretted qualifying for the World Cup and finds the task ahead too daunting! Soon after Can 2006 he clamoured for his own dismissal saying several times, I?m ready to go!

8. Doya seem to believe he is the only coach under pressure from fans and journalists.

9. The GFA blokes are no fools at all. They are thinking "safer to keep this coach with a history of first round exits at competitions (CAN 2004 and CAN 2006) so we can fire him after the tourney. If we got a top-notch coach who will we blame or fire?" Ghanaians, you get it?

10. Doya is an affordable coach compared with more experienced coaches, Hiddink, Troussier, Henri etc. Yet Ghanaians expect above "affordable" results.

11. Doya with the advice of the GFA prefers third division strikers (Patrick Agyemang and Lloyd Owusu) to those playing in premier leagues (B. Armando, R. Pimpong, C. Taylor, Tachie Menson).

12. Aminu Draminu who for 4 matches has hardly ever crossed a ball to create a scoring opportunity is supposedly firmly within Doya?s "Blessed Fifteen". Baba Armando who clearly was the only threat to the Mexicans when we played them, and has two goals this year for Black stars (out of a mere total playing time of 35 minutes ), may not even make the final squad.

13. Even to the untrained eye, Patrick Agyemang with his speed, strength and Beckham-like crossing skills, will best serve Ghana as a winger. The Coach and his supporting staff with all their training and experience play him as a striker.

14. Doya has been crowned a chief in Ghana and now stars in a hit film "Duroll, Mogyadro Papa"

15. The GFA is likely to schedule a friendly match on 9th June during the opening ceremony of the WC.

16. Expect a number of our friendlies to be cancelled by the GFA. Expect them to back that with "valid" reasons.

17. It is too late to sack Doya or even contemplate that so Ghanaians will have to endure him. Unless by some miracle he does a Multidinovich. ("My mother is sick, Ghanaians sleep too much" Remember him?)

18. Many Ghanaians and journalists, who think winning a competition is all about score predictions on radio call-in programmes, expect Doya and his Black Stars to return to Ghana with the World Cup trophy. And surley they will. So meet them at Kotoka International Airport on Monday July 10 2006. Touch down scheduled at 6.45 am. Don?t miss it! See you then.

19. This article is not intended to run anyone down . It is intended to simply point out my observations to Ghanaians. It is also to say to Doya, "Come on! When the time comes and we get beaten, so be it! But puhleeze! before and during the match and until the bones are rotten, belieeeeeeve you can do it!"
