Letter From The President: Backward ever, forward never?

Jubilee reflections IV: Backward ever, forward never?

Countrymen and women, loyalists and opponents
I have a confession to make. Most of you might have seen me on TV proclaiming that “it is a great time to be a citizen of Sikaman”. Actually, I don’t believe in that. Yes we are going to have a lot of fun as we celebrate 50 years of “independence”. But don’t forget that much of it will be in darkness and we will be celebrating nationhood at a time when most of our people have nothing to really cheer about.

Over the last three weeks, I have been reflecting on the jubilee celebrations and my letters have mainly focussed on our follies and shortcomings. I have made it known that our country is worse off now than it was in 1957 and that with the commemorations which begin in a few days, we will only be celebrating 50 wasted years.
