Letter From The President: I wish..I wish...I wish

Fri, 9 Mar 2007 Source: J. A. Fukuor/Daily Dispatch

Countrymen and women, loyalists and opponents,

Countrymen and women, loyalists and opponents,
Those celebrating our country’s anniversary and those who have refused to take part for reasons best known to yourselves, I want to congratulate you all on the occasion of 50th anniversary of our nation’s birth. We have very little to be proud of but we need to be happy that despite all the challenges we have stood together for 50 years - one happy and peaceful but poor nation.

The celebrations have been wow! With the whole country festooned with the national colours and parts of the capital still very dirty, you must have seen all the foreign dignitaries – riding around in our recently-acquired brand new BMWs, Chryslers and Jaguars. If initially, it didn’t make sense for us to buy 150 brand new luxury cars for this occasion, I believe you must be changing your mind by now. First, we have used the cars to impress our visitors and second, if all goes well, the cars will be auctioned off for cheap to some lucky, very well connected citizens.

I suppose you are also thanking your stars for the celebrations, which have led to the suspension of the power rationing exercise. I know that some of you, however, continue to suffer incessant power outages but I believe that most of the country has been enjoying interrupted power since the beginning of the month. Thank God for anniversaries.
