Sex Saturated Society

The term 'Sex Saturated Society' was first used by Mr Cosmos Owusu Afriyie who is the headmaster of Church of Christ Secondary/commercial school (CRISEC) located at Ejisu-Ashanti Region. He used this term to describe the general decline in moral standards in our society. I strongly believe the term suit the Ghanaian society of today.

The Ghanaian society of today is not like that of yesteryear. Things have changed in terms of lifestyle; dressing; moral, health and economic issues. Our society of today has seen a drastic decline in moral standards. Things or behaviour which were considered morally wrong in the past are being considered right or normal in our society today. 'Discipline' and 'Courtesy' have been thrown to the dogs. Now everywhere you go and wherever you may find yourself, you are likely to see a sex related item or experience a sex related event in the form of musical shows, fashion shows, beauty pageants,advertisement,TV/radio programs etc. Our society has been saturated with 'sex' highlights.

Some of the 'daughters of Eve' still living in this present times are making life highly unbearable for most of the living 'sons of Adam' primarily through their way of dressing. These daughters of Eve intentionally and deliberately wear 'tops' which expose their breasts and cleavages. They also wear skirts meant for Kindergarten girls. Such dresses expose the navel (either small or big), stomach (flat or protruding) and pubic hairs of these daughters of Eve which is simply unacceptable.

In this present times, when 'sons of Adam' make up their minds to board 'trotro', they must make sure they sit at the front seat. If they dare sit at any other place apart from the front seat and an 'unrepented' daughter of Eve decides to alight from the 'trotro', the only scene that their innocent eyes will capure or the images that will be received by the 'retinae' of their eyes will be nothing but exposed underwear (if she is even wearing one). The pant may be old, new, stretched, overstretched or tight with colours ranging from 'Red' to the last colour of the rainbow. If the 'sons of Adam' in the 'trotro' are lucky or unlucky, they may also see waist beads of different kinds and shapes.

You can really see that, the 'sons of Adam' who sit at the back seats of trotro temporarily suffer from 'conjunctivitis' which the 'inflammation of the eyes'. Also if these sons of Adam happens not to be direct descendants of Apostle Paul, then it is likely there will be a sharp rise in their hormonal levels which may lead to an unexpected and inconvenient 'erection of their manhood. Unfortunately,we do not have 'Men and Juvenile Units (MAJU) where the sons of Adam who have become victims of such unpleasant circumstances can report their ordeal to.

The Ghanaian Music Industry has also been saturated with profane lyrics and obscene music videos. It has now become a norm that 'sex' sells. Certain songs with profane lyrics have been selected as the best in their award categories. As for the music videos especially the contemporary highlifes and hiplife videos the least said about them the better. In most of these music videos, you will see some daughters of Eve dancing by shaking their camera-faced buttocks nonstop, caressing a son of Adam singer with passionate kisses. These music videos portray females as 'sex toys'. Surprisingly and rather interestingly, these music videos are aired on our TV stations which are accordingly watched by children as young as six years old. Researchers say, 'What we see stick into our minds more than what we are being told'. Thus these 'obscene' videos may continue to live in the minds of the child for a very long time.

Talking of advertisements, it is an undeniable fact that, most of them are filled with 'sex' ingredients. As for the adverts on the so called 'powerful gin bitters' the least said about them the better. Even adverts on seemingly harmless products like toothpaste, chewing gum, deodorant, local body cream etc have not been spared from obscene scenes. Should I go on. Time and space would not permit me to comment on our 'Sex Saturated University/Polytechnic campuses.

We cannot cry over spilt milk but we can at least prevent a tin of milk from spilling out. Proverbs 22:6 states that 'Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it'. We must therefore instil the spirit of discipline and courtesy in our children. Overseers of the Music Industry should ensure that music albums including album covers pass through censorship. The National Media Commission should impose strict censorship on all adverts. The Ministry of Information and National Orientation and The National Commision on Civic Education (NCCE) must educate the nation on the importance of dressing decently. MOWAC,DVVSU,FIDA and other female rights NGO's must join in the fight against feminine indecent dressing.

We must do all we can to turn our 'Sex Saturated Society' into a 'Morally Behaved Society'.
