Please note that the attempt to introduce Islamic Banking into the GhanaIan financial system is not to make it as substitute for the current conventional banking you have alluded to. It is amongst aimed at promoting inclusivity whereby other Ghanaians can also participate actively in banking activities without being forced to patronize the current 'interest-'riddled banking landscape without their will. By the way, I find the benefits of the Christian banking concept you have mentioned quite appetizing and would welcome it. Together with Islamic banking, they would give a chunk of Ghanaians another diversity of banking products in Ghana and beyond.

Doc what you don't know is that many investment financial institutions in Ghana are already sympathetic to the principles of Islamic banking. On their forms during the applications they give investors the option to decide which areas they don't want their money to be invested in. Sure know about SIC Financial.

Please note that even in the birth places of secularism like the USA and UK, islamic banking and other financial institutions are thriving and doing very well without any threat to any Christian. We still sing the same national anthem but have different ways of seeing things and how to worship our God, Allah, Dieu etc.

The banking system in Ghana has always been modelled around Christian values and we muslims have had to live with that. Even when you ask MTN not to credit you with any interest earned on your mobile wallet, they still send it because the rule is not being enforced to the letter. Riba is a very serious sin in Islam but we have always hid behind secular state and no other options available to us to be indulging in it.

Find out what Bill Clinton is spending his time on after retirement : the Grameen Banking system moduled on Islamic principles. Dr. Mohammed refused an interest based loan and used his own meager savings to start small loan system that has birthed the Grameen bank. Find out how it is doing now and why a whole former US President would be championing the principle.

Let us keep and respect the peace we have . The world respects and cherishes Ghana for that so don't bring this confusion in the country.

Your appeal to national unity and the integrity of the Constitution lacks substantive grounding, as you fail to present any compelling evidence that the introduction of Islamic banking poses a threat to our collective cohesion as Ghanaians.
A critical omission in your reasoning is the absence of any indication that Islamic banking would be imposed on all citizens. In reality, the voluntary nature of this financial model renders your concerns about constitutional compromise largely unfounded. Islamic banking, like any other financial service, is a choice rather than a compulsion. No Ghanaian would be forced to use it unless they willingly opted to do so.
There are several countries in Africa that maintain a secular financial system yet have integrated Islamic banking into their economic frameworks without compromising their constitutional values. Tanzania offers a pertinent example. Despite upholding a secular governance structure, Tanzania has successfully incorporated Islamic banking into its broader financial sector. This inclusion has neither disrupted national unity nor undermined constitutional principles. On the contrary, it has expanded financial access and diversity, contributing positively to economic growth. Ghana can draw lessons from such experiences, recognising that the introduction of Islamic banking need not be perceived as a threat, but rather as a complementary financial model within a pluralistic and democratic society.
If your concern were genuinely about unity, a more constructive approach would be to interrogate whether the introduction of Islamic banking might raise issues of regulatory imbalance or policy implementation, rather than stirring religious anxieties. To compare this development to a broader religious imposition or to suggest that it undermines the foundations of Ghana’s Constitution is not only unhelpful, but also evokes the kind of religious tensions that have contributed to political instability in other countries, such as Nigeria.
We must be careful not to import divisive narratives into our democratic space. Ghana’s strength lies in its pluralism, which encompasses religious, ethnic and ideological diversity. It is through mutual respect and open dialogue, not fear-based arguments, that we protect the integrity of our Constitution and maintain the peace we all cherish.

What is wrong when a christian market woman decide to go an Islamic Bank for an interest free loan, than go to some of these conventional banks who always chase them and take all their profits.
