  I don't know if it was implemented in the other regional capitals.
  That was what the two civilian leaders did.
  Kofi Busia is not the person I liked, but when someone tried to do his best to make Ghanaians look like human beings and not animals, you must praise him.
  Ignatius Acheampong did not continue with Busia's project, and would have by his time introduce the use of water closets, since tape water was a free social need for Ghanaians and was supplied to them without cost.
  Kwame Nkrumah's system was the stooping one, which flows into a tank after water is poured on the feces by whoever is in charge of the public toilet.
  However, during the PNDC era the Kumasi Ventilated known as the KVIP was introduced, that from its hygienic point of view and structure is not a thing to write home about, though it is the system being used in most towns and villages in Ghana.
  The irony in the use of KVIP is that John Rawlings whiles a military officer uses a water closet toilet, then, why should he and his advisers who live in houses provided to them by the state use water closet toilets, but force KVIP on Ghanaians.
  The most offending part of the use of KVIP is that after going for nature call, you must then buy water to wash yourself, wash your clothings and clean your shoes.
  The pain in all that is that the Europeans that came and forced the KVIP on us were then using feces digesting systems, that are covered to prevent people from inhaling the poignant smell of of feces.
  At the same time they are water operated, their digestive system just like the that of living things turns their waste into water.
  The charcoal and sand in them kills germs and bacterias before they waste water that is filtered comes out.
  The waste can to used to water plants in the garden, not low plants which are bearing fruit like tomatoes, onion, pepper, among others.
  Their digestive system in addition to turning the feces into water at the same time produce gas that can be used to cook.
  That is better than the KVIP or the septic tank toilet system.
  With such system, the state may preserve lands near settlements that will be used for agricultural purpose using the water from the feces digester to grow plantain, banana, mango, pear, pineapple, orange, lime, among others.
  The gas from the digester can also be directed to a common gas chamber with the rotten egg odor added and be supplied to the community.
  It will interest you that during the days of Colonel Murmur Gaddafi presidency of Libya, Libyan women where thought of how to turn the droppings of domestic animals into gas, which they use to cook.
  The same can be done her in Ghana.
  Households will then use the waste from such system to make garden in their homes or around them.

  It is way past time we mounted a frontal assault on the lack of access to hygiene facilities. As long as we are going to continue to eat, we are going to continue to expel waste from our bodies. The idea that after all these years we, as a people, have not provided for meeting that basic need reflects very poorly on us!
