Tang: The light at the end of the tunnel!

Master Anthony Tang, you have been vilified and ridiculed simply because you are not the “regular” Ghanaian face representing your school at the National Science and Maths Quiz. Many sought to break your spirit, but you have proven to be an indomitable lion, a young man whose focus and determination cannot be crushed.

You dug deep into your intellectual armoury to secure the victory that has eluded Aquinas for six long years. Many of us had begun to believe we were jinxed, but you had other plans. If not for your brilliance and composure, Aquinas would have become the laughing stock of our ever-noisy neighbours, Accra Academy.

They were waiting eagerly for our downfall, but you silenced them. Their memes are now as useless as sterile seeds.

For the first time in six years, Aquinas will once again behold the face of the witty and intelligent quiz mistress, Dr Elsie Effah Kaufmann. Your name, Tang, will remain indelible in the annals of Aquinas, even if the journey ends at the next stage.

Let us not forget your equally committed partner, Sowah Maxwell Laryea, the unsung hero who has complemented your efforts with diligence and calm strength. Continue to support Tang as you both carry the Aquinas banner higher. Even if your name is not on everyone’s lips, your contribution has not gone unnoticed. We see you, and we salute you.

To those who think mockery and racist remarks can belittle his achievements, shame on you! We, as Ghanaians, condemn racism abroad, yet we practice it among ourselves. Let us learn to applaud excellence, not destroy it because it comes in a different form.

Tang, the entire Aquinas army stands firmly behind you. Never lose focus until the final whistle is blown. Old Toms everywhere are proud of you, for Aquinas will forever remain a cosmopolitan institution, a school that welcomes all, regardless of race or background.

To the doubting Thomases, come to the only University of Cantonments, and you’ll understand why being an Aquinas student is the best decision of your life.
