Thank You, Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, for the Amazing Consular Service: A personal account of responsive and compassionate consular assistance Dr Dr Ing E K Glover, Esq.

The death of a parent is one of life's most painful experiences. When that loss occurs while one is abroad, the emotional burden can be compounded by the practical challenges of trying to return home at short notice.

In February 2026, I was preparing to return to Ghana for my father’s funeral. Following his earlier passing, the funeral had been scheduled for March 7, and I needed to be home by March 1 to join my family and assist with the preparations. As I hold a Dutch passport and was travelling from Finland through the Netherlands to Ghana, I first needed to renew my passport and subsequently obtain a visa to enter Ghana.

What could have been an overwhelming experience was made considerably easier by the assistance I received from two diplomatic missions: the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Finland and the Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

I share this experience primarily as a sincere expression of gratitude. Assistance from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Finland Before travelling to the Netherlands, I contacted the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Finland regarding the urgent renewal of my Dutch passport. I explained that my father had passed away in Ghana and that I needed to travel home urgently for his funeral.

The Embassy responded with understanding and professionalism. The officials took my circumstances into consideration and expedited the passport renewal process. To my great relief, I received my renewed passport within just a couple of days. At a time when I was already dealing with the emotional pain of losing my father, their prompt assistance removed an important practical obstacle from my journey.

What I appreciated most was not simply the speed with which the passport was renewed, but the manner in which the officials responded to my circumstances. They listened, understood the urgency and provided the assistance I needed. For this, I remain sincerely grateful to the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Finland.

My experience at the Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in the Netherlands With my renewed Dutch passport, I proceeded with my journey through the Netherlands. I arrived on February 25, 2026, and on February 26 I visited the Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in the Netherlands to apply for the visa I needed to travel to Ghana.

I was under considerable pressure. The funeral was only days away, and I needed to be home by March 1. From the moment I arrived at the Embassy, however, I was met with a welcoming and courteous atmosphere. The receptionist was helpful and guided me through the process. After I explained my circumstances, the Embassy officials showed considerable understanding of the urgency of my situation.

To my surprise and great relief, the Ambassador, the Deputy Head of Mission and other diplomatic and consular officials became aware of my circumstances. They offered their condolences and demonstrated genuine concern for my situation. Their response was particularly meaningful because I was not simply travelling for an ordinary visit. I was a son trying desperately to get home following the death of his father.

The officials took steps to facilitate the processing of my application, and I received my Ghanaian visa within a few hours. I remain deeply grateful for that assistance. For me, the experience demonstrated the importance of the human dimension of consular service. Procedures and regulations are necessary, but the manner in which officials engage with people can make an enormous difference, particularly when those people are experiencing difficult personal circumstances.

I felt welcomed. I felt listened to. I felt that my circumstances had been understood. That, in my view, is excellent customer service. A gesture I will remember It is easy to notice shortcomings in public institutions and to speak openly when services are delayed or expectations are not met. But good service deserves recognition too.

My experience at the Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in the Netherlands was one that I believe should be acknowledged publicly. I am not suggesting that every applicant will necessarily have the same experience. Every consular application is different, and established procedures must naturally be respected. I am simply sharing what happened in my own case and expressing my appreciation for the manner in which I was treated.

The Embassy did more than process my visa application efficiently. Its officials showed courtesy and understanding at a time when I was dealing with grief and considerable pressure. Their assistance helped me get home in time to be with my family and prepare for my father's funeral.

That is something I will not forget. I would therefore like to express my sincere appreciation to the Ambassador, the Deputy Head of Mission, the diplomatic and consular officials and the receptionist who assisted me at the Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in the Netherlands. I also extend my heartfelt appreciation to the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Finland for expediting the renewal of my Dutch passport and helping me overcome an important challenge at the beginning of my journey.

The two experiences left me with a renewed appreciation for what professional and responsive public service can mean to an individual. At a time when I was grieving the loss of my father, I encountered officials who were willing to listen, understand and assist.

For a grieving son trying to get home, that meant more than they may ever know. Thank you, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Finland. Thank you, Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Your professionalism, courtesy and understanding helped make a very difficult journey possible. I remain sincerely grateful.
