Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party
Fondly do we, as Ghanaians, hope and fervently do we pray that, at the right time, our nation will be blessed with a leader who can carry Ghana on a journey of possibility. We have hoped and prayed for a leader who can inspire us to believe that, regardless of the limitations confronting us, a better and prosperous Ghana remains within our reach.
We have hoped and prayed for a leader with compassion for all and malice towards none; a leader who places the national interest above personal, partisan or sectional interests; a leader who understands the aspirations of ordinary Ghanaians and is prepared to work tirelessly, intelligently and efficiently to translate those aspirations into tangible results.
At 63, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stands as one of the most consequential political leaders of his generation and, undoubtedly, one of the most experienced and tested political figures in Ghana today.
His journey has not been without challenges. He has experienced the heights of national service, the intense scrutiny that comes with public leadership, the enormous responsibility of serving as Vice President, the disappointment of electoral defeat, and the demands of returning to the political arena with renewed determination.
Yet, perhaps, the most important lesson from his journey is this: Dr. Bawumia has refused to surrender the possibility of a better and prosperous Ghana.
A leader who believes in possibility
The defining feature of Dr. Bawumia's leadership has always been his belief that Ghana can do things differently, better and more efficiently.
As Vice President, he championed a vision of a Ghana increasingly driven by technology, data, innovation and digital systems. He demonstrated that government services could be brought closer to citizens; that technology could reduce bureaucracy; that digital identification could strengthen the formal economy; and that innovation could be deployed to solve some of our most difficult developmental challenges.
From digital payments and financial inclusion to the National Identification System, digitalization of public services, mobile interoperability, digital addressing, the use of drones for emergency medical logistics, and numerous other interventions, Dr. Bawumia helped to demonstrate that possibility is not merely an idea. It can become public policy and practical reality.
His greatest contribution may therefore not be any single intervention. It may be the mindset he helped to instill: that Ghana does not have to accept inefficiency simply because it has existed for a long time; that African problems can have African solutions; and that technology can be harnessed to improve the lives of ordinary people.
From vice president to presidential candidate
In the 2024 election, Dr. Bawumia offered himself to the Ghanaian people as the candidate of the New Patriotic Party. The outcome did not go in his favour. Like every electoral defeat, it was a moment that demanded reflection, humility and introspection. But defeat did not diminish his commitment to Ghana, nor did it end his political journey. Instead, he returned to the people and to the Party he had served for many years.
In the subsequent NPP presidential primaries, the delegates once again entrusted him with the responsibility of leading the Party into the 2028 general elections. That decision is significant.
It represents not merely another political nomination. It is a renewed vote of confidence in a leader whose experience, intellectual capacity, policy orientation, and understanding of the changing dynamics of Ghanaian society are considered necessary for the next phase of the Party's journey.
The road to 2028 will not be easy. It will require discipline, unity, humility, effective communication, grassroots engagement and a compelling vision capable of restoring confidence among Ghanaians. But Dr. Bawumia enters this journey with something invaluable: experience.
He has seen government from the inside. He has served at the highest levels of national leadership. He has contested a presidential election. He has experienced victory and defeat.
He has listened to criticism. He has had the opportunity to reflect on the lessons of the past. And, importantly, he now has the opportunity to present to Ghanaians not merely the promise of what could be done, but a refined vision informed by experience.
2028: From possibility to delivery
The 2028 election must therefore be about more than personalities. It must be about Ghana's future. It must be about how we create jobs for our young people, support businesses, strengthen institutions, improve public services, harness technology, transform agriculture, expand opportunities and build an economy in which every Ghanaian has a genuine stake.
It must be about moving from possibility to delivery, and I dare say that this is exactly what Dr. Bawumia represents. He has demonstrated and will continue to demonstrate that the next chapter will be characterized by greater efficiency, stronger accountability, broader inclusion, deeper grassroots engagement, and bold solutions to the structural challenges confronting our nation. Dr. Bawumia is that leader who is not afraid to think differently.
The road ahead
At 63, Dr. Bawumia is entering another important chapter of his remarkable public life. This is not merely a birthday to celebrate age. It is an occasion to celebrate service, resilience, sacrifice, and an enduring commitment to Ghana.
The journey from economist and international development expert to Vice President and now twice-selected presidential candidate of the NPP is a journey that carries enormous responsibility.
The task ahead is equally enormous. Ghana needs leadership that can unite rather than divide; leadership that listens as much as it speaks; leadership that embraces innovation without abandoning the vulnerable; leadership that understands that political power is ultimately a means to improve the lives of the people.
Above all, Ghana needs leadership that gives its people reason to believe again. And that is why the 2028 journey must be a journey of renewed hope, renewed purpose and renewed possibility.
Happy 63rd Birthday Dr Bawumia
Your Excellency, on the occasion of your 63rd birthday, I join your family, friends, colleagues, supporters and well-wishers across Ghana and beyond to celebrate you. May Almighty Allah grant you many more years in good health, wisdom, strength and peace.
May He continue to guide your steps, strengthen your resolve, and grant you the humility, courage, and wisdom required for the enormous responsibility that lies ahead.
May the lessons of yesterday become the wisdom of tomorrow. May the disappointments of the past become the foundation for a stronger future. And may the next chapter of your public service be defined by greater achievement, greater unity and greater service to the Ghanaian people.
As you lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections, may you remain steadfast in your commitment to Ghana, and may your campaign be anchored on a compelling vision of hope, opportunity and transformation.
The road to 2028 has begun. May it be a journey that brings the Party together, reconnects it with the Ghanaian people, and ultimately earns the confidence of the electorate.
And, by the grace of Almighty Allah, may 2028 be the year of victory. May your next chapter be greater than the last. May your service to Ghana continue to inspire. And may the dream of a prosperous, digital, inclusive, and confident Ghana become a reality.
IT IS STILL POSSIBLE.
