Kwesi, I think Sodzi-Tettey is making a very important point and the response is not why would he not research and write it for them. It is disturbing that our leaders from politics, industry, education, etc die with all the knowledge and experience that future generations could have benefited from. I think that is the idea behind the article.
The article has made me wonder why. Probably, our leaders are rich enough after leaving political office and no longer need to earn any additional income, whilst in the developed world, politicians make more money after they leave office, including writing about their political experience, though not all of them need the extra income from the books that they write. In fact, Tony Blair has given the income from his book to his charitable organisation and not for his personal use.

Hi folks, rawlings has nothing to write about. He is no better than General Acheampong. He is an oppoturnists who used the Ghanaian milatory in the name of REVOLUTION to plunder mother Ghana. Everybody knows that rawlings is a thief and no wonder mahama is following his steps. rawlings is a murderer, thief, bully, false pretender, coward and do not fear God. His government gave birth to terany in Ghana and he did not live up to the expectation of what he promised to take Ghana to. Let me give you rawlings picture throughout his 19yeasr of rule. Someone who used the Ghanaian milatary might to plunder the country and deprived its citezens of people who could halt him from looting. The governments of Acheampong/Akuffo was 100 times better than that of rawlings and all the presidents of NDC. What the Ghanaians need is a probe of rawlings not his legacy. You do not need a legacy from a thief and an opportunist. You want accountability and this is what the Ghasnaians are being deprived of, hence the ridging of election result to avoid a government who could trial rawlings. Long live Ghana minus the legacy of jyimi jyimi rawlings.

Book projects are very expensive venture. The hope of patronage in the country you mentioned motivated their leaders to write. How many of us will by and read if they write? Should they write and distribute for free or for sale? Why have none of the publishing houses in Ghana like Afram Publications, Adwinsa, ect. are not approaching our leaders to help them write? It is simply unprofitable. Even our graduates don't read books nor news as they do listen to radio and watch TV.

Uncle JH Mensah wrote one of the best booklets on economic planning in Ghana in the 1960s: The relevant of Marxism to Economic Planning in Ghana.
Others who must write are Mohamed Ibn Chambas; Professor HM Bonsu; THE former rector of GIMPA, Chris Atim, Kofi Totobi and Madam Komla Gbedemah.
Abdul Malik Baako has his draft for many years now so is Kwesi Pratt Jnr. And since today is independence day and vosting has just ended in Kenya, may I recommend: Nkrumah's Ghana and East Africa by Opoku Agyemah for your read. You would be proud as a Ghanaian by the bold interventions by Nkrumah and the CPP to make Kenya, Uganda etc independent nations. Forward to writing.

The writer, Sodzi, makes very interesting comments. Memoirs writing has been a distinguishing hallmark of past presidents the world over who are worth their salt and have a story to tell.
In Ghana those who've already left office have nothing to lose and in my opinion would rather endear themselves to ghanaians if they'd document their failures, successes, what they could have done better, unfulfilled dreams and their vision for the future in books.
Unfortunately, here in Ghana we have a very poor reading and writing culture. This can be evidenced from the sorry state of the few public libraries dotted sparsely in Ghana . In July of 1993 whilst on a business trip to South Africa my hosts arranged for a group tour of the University of Johannesborg.I was greatly impressed and delighted but pleasantly surprised that they had their own book publishing and printing division on campus.Back in the day we used to pride ourselves as having the best education system on the continent but libraries unfortunately were never at any time a part of our burgeoning system.
I don't have any record of any of our presidents encouraging a reading culture among the citizenry, especially the youth . Reading and writing are a dynamic duo.You must love reading to develop an appetite for acquiring writing skills. Libraries are just as scarce as cash flow is for the poorest village dwellers in Ghana.Building libraries and encouraging the development of writing and reading skills among the younger generation don't seem to have place on our priority list. Is it then any wonder that our presidents cannot even share their memoirs and thoughts in a book with ghanaians? Perhaps many of them never developed a reading and writing habit anytime in their lives before entering politics.
How can we ever learn from their experiences? This is one of the main reasons why we keep failing as a nation because we have little or nothing to learn from our political leaders past experiences.
Nigerians are more into book writing than their ghanaian counterparts because they realize the possibility of an economic windfall in the book writing business.
What're our political heavyweights going to write about since some of them got to the presidency by a stroke of good fortune, fraud or misjudgement on the part of the electorate? What are they going to write about that would be of any worth to the almost non-existent reading public if their only motivation to become president was to attend to their personal needs or settle some old political scores? Their presidency was never about the people. It was about them, their cronies and sycophantic sympathisers.
Rawlings is a very charismatic and enigmatic personality and to many of his admirers he's a cult figure. His life transformation story would be a thriller to millions of ghanaians but to date no one knows neither his rags to riches story nor his story in its entirety. What is he waiting for or what is he afraid of? Your guess !

She wasn't around in Conakry to "continuously hound" the Osagyefo to get busy with his writing. Let's give credit where credit is due - Kwame Nkrumah was the most prolific Ghanaian, (tempted to say African) writers.
Besides, there's one important Ghanaian writer that deserves mentioning - the author of The Mind of Africa, William E. Abraham (Kwadwo Abraham)

Good comment Sodzi but what is the point that will stimulate. Remember the coup d'état in February 1966 when Afrifa and the UP/PP(Mate mehu) gangs indiscriminately and without the sense of responsibility eradicated every literature about Nkrumah. The little political minds of Afrifa, Busia, Victor Owusu R.R. Amponsa etc. did not understand ' Nkrumah Never Dies'. They were just out to destroy Nkrumah and had no sense of the future education of the younger/upcoming generations. Even the history of Adolph Hitler can be found in the archives of many top Universities or places of learning and this an advancement in all social constructs.
