Whatever, the reason for this nntimely move, it does not send a good signal from the presidency that is currently under the barrage of NPP attacks and crisis in the utility industry. The president may have been confronted with choosing a minister for the Northern Region but to take this radical step barely a month after the vetting of the ministers for regions they have been appointed to sends a wrong signal. Dr Garbah, PV and the chief o staff need to sit up and think through before acting to satisfy instantaneous exigencies. I am still be convinced that this is going to work; if local people are supposed to take charge of their own affairs why this?. The presidency should not invite problems when there is none.

The President listened. We called for it, and he listened. He only RE-POSTED them!!!

Dr., it is more difficult than what you thought. How can those who are MP's serve their constituents well in other regions. I think the president didnt think through before making this reshuffle.

On the contrary, I think it is a smart (though risky) and decisive move on the part of the president. This is not an afterthought but one that in my view has come out of deep thinking and trying to test a philosophy and model. If these ministers (and any other public servants for that matter) are truly Ghanaian and want to serve, then surely they must demonstrate that ability wherever they are posted?
Michael, I respect your views although I have not always agreed with them. This is one such occasion my friend.

The writer asks very pertinent questions in his opening paragraph, which you should address.
Reshuffling appointees after only one month in office surely does not demonstrate decisiveness and a person should not be blamed for thinking that this was an "afterthought".
Why did the President not take into account the matters that have necessitated the reshuffle, prior to making the appointments? Or were these matters not existing at the time he made the appointments?

Sometimes, you do what is expedient, and then act in the way you wish to afterwards. The tradition seems to be that someone from the region typically occupies the office of regional minister. What the president has done in a two-stage process, and in my view does not disturb nor change anything. It is a wise move and I believe one that he had given much thought to, even before he made the initial appointments. No harm nor damage has, or will be done to this move and although the writer is entitled to ask those questions, this is my take on it. In a democracy and among intellectuals (including economists and legal minds, not to talk of medical experts), there are always differences of opinion and I am sure I like you, am entitled to mine. Thanks for disagreeing, but that' the way I see it.

Contrary to the author's argument, I think the reshuffle is in the interest of the regions. I was actually disappointed with the initial appointments since from my observation, most of the regional ministers turn to direct developmental projects to their districts or constituencies to boost their changes of either re-election or capturing the seat at some point in time. Ghanaian as we are, the demands from your kinsmen in the region usually makes it difficult for the Regional minister to be objective in dealing with issues and this often creates tension within the government machinery. This is not good for a party and the Ministers in general who will need to prepare the grounds for the next elections but it is certainly good for the development of those regions. Plus, contracts will be given to cronies but to people who the minister thinks can do it. And again, it reduces the tribal tension that we have been accumulating all these years. Eventhough the timing of the decision is not good, I think it is in the right direction. Mother Ghana wins in this case.

My main issues with this unplanned reshuffle are 1) that it is happening just a month after the initial assignments. What has changed over the past one month, or is it a case of rushing out to announce the list when it was not quite ready? Or some interest groups were not consulted originally and the govt is now giving in to their demands? Not well thought through, eh?
And then 2) did anyone think about how this would actually work out in reality, especially for the MPs who are Regional Ministers?
For example, Paul Evans Aidoo, who has been W/R Minister since 2009, MP for Sefwi Wiawso constituency in the W/R and presumably resident in Takoradi with his family will now shuttle between his home in W/R, Parliament House in Accra and his RCC office in Sunyani. What sort of traingle is that? God forbid, will he not die of stress in one year with all this travel, whether by road or by air??! Another example - Nii Laryea Afotey, MP for Kpone Katamanso will now shuttle between Accra and Ho. Helen Ntoso will shuttle between Koforidua and Parliament House in Accra whilst her constituents in Krachi West V/R eventually complain about neglect.
The entire mess is already giving concerned Ghanaians like me a headache. This JDM government is fast becoming a laughing stock within and outside Ghana, what with our failure to provide basic amenities whilst the showmanship goes on with JDM and his cronies congratulating themselves at every turn. I am quite disappointed.

I will wait for your future installments on this issue to respond fully because the reasons you have advanced so far do not hold water.
For Ghana to move forward, we need to move away from the often rigid fossilized regional mentality, which is clearly the bane to our collective development.
Have a good day!
