The author wrote in paragraph two that "The latter and one other colleague were later arrested and tried by a military tribunal".
The three surrogates of that coup engineered by Afrifa were Moses Yeboah (Bono from Japekrom), Adu-sei Poku (Asante) and Arthur (Fante). Afrifa ensured that the two non-asantes, Arthur and Yeboah were executed and the only asante among them-Adu-sei Poku, was let go.

The Ghana International Airport was renamed Kotoka International Airport in his memory, for the simple, unrealistic and funny reason that he was killed at a spot which is now part of the forecourt of the Airport. His statue stand at that point. It is absurd and totally irresponsible to name a nation's Airport after a man who helped in overthrowing a legitimate government, and shamefully dying in an attempted abortive coup by junior officers. As a Lt. General if he could not stand the might of junior officers, what makes him a hero to be honoured?

The idea that a country should suffer a coup just at the outset of an Economic hardship is buffoonery . It is more reasonable to blame a dire political stalemate that really threatens the universal sufferage Citizens enjoy for a Coup, instead.
It is the one-party policy and the drift to Communism by Nkrumah that earns our first Coup any legitimacy. Even though we need to be sympathize the fact the Opposition to Nkrumah was growing unnacceptably violent he had other democratic means to curb their violence other than coercing the Parliament to adopt the one-party state.
I would say then that the opposition drove Nkrumah to the exact corner they wanted him to attract the full backing of the West who only reluctantly conceded to our Independence and wanted Nkrumah and the Nation to fail in our freedom.
The Economic failure in the USA that began under G. Bush Jr. is many times worse than what Ghana experienced under our first Administration and used by the West as part of the reasons for our Coup.

Change is inevitable however certain changes as to changing the name of Ghana's International Airport to another is just plain stupidity.
Has the author thought of the resistance? And has the author thought of which Government to carry out the load?
What about the huge effects on the international level as this name has known from a very longtime?
Even Accra Sports Stadium when changed by Kronfuor and his 40 other thieves is still called Accra Sports Stadium when this is even a domestic issue.
There is no need to even think about changing names here and what current Governments need to do is built new modern international airport and perhaps nae it after Nkrumah or probably name it after this author.

I don't think Afrifa had any reason to get Kotoka out of the way. Kotoka was no threat to Afrifa. The man had no interest in leading Ghana. He didn't have any political ambitions. He was a soldier's soldier, not a politician. Something may have caused him to overthrow Nkrumah, perhaps CIA, as people said. But he didn't do it for personal political glory. He was a trained teacher before joining the army. So it wasn't that he was uneducated.
Perhaps Afrifa was more ambitious but he was very young himself and there were seniors ahead of him. In the end, Afrifa also led the nation.

Oooooooh Sir. Kwame Asante, how can you be so naive and so out of touch with realities? Wise men - both Africans and non-Africans all over the world agree that Nkrumah was overthrown because his vision for Africa would have made the continent so independent on west. The west were thinking how their future could or would be without Africa. See how they overthrew the uniter of the continent and quickly plunged the newly independent countries into a state of servitude with the collusion of the selfish ones whom you and your type praise. Sure Nkrumah, like every human, had his own fault. Nkrumah is loathed by selfish Africans, but loved and adored by concerned, selfless Africans. Two great selfless men dedicated to serving the continent, whom the CIA participated in overthrowing them are Lumumba and Nkrumah. Get the facts.

No! I strongly disagree. I believe in spite of his idealism Nkrumah would not have persisted on towing a massively flawed Political paradigm. The guy loved to succeed too much to have led the Nation with total foolhardiness into abject failure. At worst, we would have been closer to what China has become.
One huge evidence to support that hypothesis is Nkrumah's acquiescence to the dictates of the World Bank and the USA on the Akosombo Dam negotiations. As much he acknowledged the threat the Kennedy Administration posed to his rule, he still put the Nation's interest above his pride to take the bitter pill of arrangement to finish the Dam. That is why we got stuck with the onerous lopsided agreement with VALCO.
We could all learn more from these discussions if we could be civil and honest about them, and setting ideological sentimentalism aside.

Surely, the insults do not help us learn from one another. I was fairly grown and caught in the middle of the events. My personal observation on this issue of Afrifah vs. Kotoka is that there were suspicions that Afrifah was the brain behind the abortive Arthur-led Coup. But it was just that: suspicions. Nothing concrete was established against Okatakyie on that.
There were a few Media sources that raised those questions but they seemed to have long shown to be unfriendly to him, citing some notions that Afrifah was trying to outshine the rest on the triumvirate presidential Commission. He was long accused of being a pompous General who wanted to always outstage his peers. But that alone did not prove anything on his involvement in the aborted Coup. If anyone could provide provable evidence to legitimize the claimed bragging by Yeboah and Arthur that Afrifah would save their neck, then we would have more probing to do. In fact, that would only deepen our quest for any indisputable evidence in that sense. It would still not suffice to incriminate Okatakyie.
By the way, is it not for the same reason that many believe Boakye Djan asked to have Afrifah added to the list of those executed to avenge Yeboah who was his relative?
We cannot believe sheer rumors all the time until we follow them with objective fact-finding.
Long live Ghana!!!

Kwame Nkurmah sponsored the very first botched coup in Nigeria. Barely two years into Nigertia's independence in 1962 a rival politician on tribal grounds organised a failed coup attempt from Ghana under the support of Kwame Nkurmah. Kwameh didn't care that he was supporting an illigal move to topple a legitimately elected government. And in January 1966 another set of military guy staged a coup in Nigeria with active help of Kwame Nkrumah. This time the crime succeeded and almost all political leaders of Nigeria from other sides were murdered in cold blood, but a counter coup prevented the criminla coupists from forming a government. When chased they escaped to Ghana where Kwame gave them shelter. It was not long Kwame himself was disgraced out of power to end his intended life presidency in Ghada. God bless the guys who pushed his away to save Ghana from a mad maglomaniac dictator.

It was NLC of which Kotoka was a quiet unassuming member renamed the airport after him. The only thing Kotoka did in Ghana's history is to plan and execute the coup against Nkrumah. He did nothing else. He was probably a good soldier and commander. He talked little and did virtually nothing in his one year on the ruling council. I am not sure he deserves such a huge honour as our international airport being named after him. Perhaps it will be enough to name some military barracks after him. After all, it is as a soldier that he was most distinguished.

But the internal CIA collaborators and dire haters of the glorious Afican Show Boy and Kantamanto, the Osagyefo who never dies to the chagrin of those who envied Nkrumah so much and feel that for all his achievements there will not be anything left for them to be associated with and that Nkrumah's name will be associated with everything he Osagyefo has made within 8 plus years is never been achieved in any classic decade.
It is true, this is no tribal issue!!
Let's give what is Caesar's to Caesar and God's to God. What did Kotoka contribute to the Accra International Airport which Nkrumah single handedly constructed???
How can something a Giant has constructed (Nkrumah) bear the name of a dwarf (Kotoka)? Wherever Nkrumah stands or stood, who can mention or remember Kotoka's name?? Apart from being a UN dedicated Ghanaian soldier, probably recruited in the Congo?? Why should Ghana, of all countries allow revisionism of her glorified history. Nobody is suggesting here that Lt General Kotoka's name cannot be mentioned or be associated with our history. While there are opthwers whose names are associated with real development of mother Ghana, there are others, whose names are associated with controversial stuff!! Kotoka has only satisfied the reactionaries of yesteryear, bomb throwers whose diabolical and naive aims were realised by the shootings Kotoka and Afrifa led in Ghana when the Osagyefo himself travelled out of Ghana!!
As Ghanaians, are we really strict and will like to put our wonderful history in a proper perspective??
A revisit to the renaming of the Accra International Airport, giving a name which befits the stature of the airport among co- international airports will even give a face lift to Accra and for that matter Ghana. Let Nkrumah remain above all in our exchequered history for the Noble Role Kwame Nkrumah played top transform the holy village to what is is today. Nkrumah NEVER DIES!!!

First of all let the hypocrites in government change the ndc to Nkrumah Democratic Congress(NDC). let's also do this to stop the buffoons in government and their foolish followers from plunging the nation into a civil war with their daily nonsense of Nkrumah this Nkrumah that. Akosombo Dam is now Nkrumah Dam, let Nkrumah Motor Way replaces Tema Motor Way, call the Jubilee-Flag Staff house as Nkrumah House and the Pualugu Tomato Factory as Nkrumah Tomato Factory. Rawlings started this silly naming splee as against sound and pragmatic economic policies to our benefit, and was followed by Mills as even the clueless Mahama tried to arm-twist the arms of a 90yr old woman, Madam Okoh, for a park which has been named after her long long ago. I have been trying to figure out what will happen if the CPP, the true Nkrumaist group, come to power but have since got any solution.

I can see the writer as someone bereft of knowledge about African leaders. One particular case is his unintelligent and provocative description about one of Africa's greatest sons, late Gen. Muritala Mohammed of Nigeria. The write is either sheer stupid or shallow educated to compare Gen. Muritala to Gen. Kotota. In the first place, if it were not for the bravery of Muritala, Nigeria would not be existing today. He won the war for Nigeria. Muritala was one of the best military officers to come from Africa. By the mere age of 20, he was already studying at sundhurst, while much older folks like Obasanjo, could not make it to that prestigious military academy. Muritala was the epitome of bravery, feared and respected by both adversaries and friends. A no-nonsense and highly efficient soldier, he had no time for bureaucracy. It is not only Nigerians who revere him, but many across the African continent. The late General has been honoured in Namibia, Angola, and Mozambique for his dedication to the liberation struggle. Does the write know about this? Seek knowledge because the internet is there if you cannot make a research in the library. Gen. Muritala is recognized among the group of great Africans such as Mandela, Nkrumah, Samora Mscheal, Thomas Sankara, Sekou Toure, Robert Mugabe, Amilcar Cabral, etc. He is also honoured with annual memorial lectures that have taken place in London and other countries. This was a leader that died as a result of his simplicity because he never travelled in a convoy. When he was assassinated, he had only 7.87 naira in his accounts! Don't write garbage and mislead people if you do not have facts and do not think others do not read or make research. You are the reason people say individuals with your names are brainless and less intelligent. For you sake, go and make your research on the beloved Gen. Muritala, know more about him and you will understand why he is honoured, not only in Nigeria, but in many African countries. I bet you will come back and write a different story if you are brave enough to do so. Once again, SEEK KNOWLEDGE BEFORE YOU WRITE.

But Sam, you'll agree that there's a lot of propaganda on both sides when it comes to the Nigerian civil war. Ok, the Igbos may be more guilty of this but the other side are not angels either. Murtala may be all that you said but his role during the war may not be a completely glorious one. War doesn't really produce any heroes - only the victors declare themselves as heroes. But I agree that the writer didn't even need say so many "uninformed" things about Murtala when he's just arguing for a change of name in Ghana. I think he realized that himself. I suspect we're meant to read only the first part of the article.

Bravo! for the wisdom in bring this to the attention of Ghanaians. In fact, as you said and needless to repeat, it is a mockery of justice and honour to name or rename an airport which was (being) built under one's regime after another who overthrew him. As far as we can say, this matter has been raised before govt officials of successive regimes over the years, well let's say unofficially. What seems NOT strange yet, is that everybody nods the head in a sign of understanding, if not support; but nobody sees the need or shows interest to initiate the change.
For whatever intent and purpose, this action was wrong from day one. The earlier we correct them the better.

We realise that you are out of touch with realities. Names are necessary because they influence the psychological drives of people, of the trend of affairs; especially when it is backed with actions. The writer gave examples in other countries and so you must analyse for yourself how it is influencing the people and the country. You may google and read about Charles de Gaulle Airport and Heathrow Airport among among many others. In U.S. for instance, many people strive to be like Kennedy, Lincoln, Washington etc. They made impact in the society and were honoured for that. Unfortunately, in Ghana and other parts of Africa, we find it difficult to even see the good people do. We only know how to criticise them. Such attitudes do not encourage others to emulate good examples. Even Ghanaians and other Africans know more western historical figures (those who made positive impact) than they do about their own countries, left alone the continent. We must more actively confront this anomaly and correct them.

Kwame Nkrumah has been vindicated. The imperialist backed National Liberation Council(NLC) which was formed after 1966 coup, named the Accra International Airport after Kotoka when he was killed in the abortive coup of April 1967.This name should be changed immediately. It is long overdue and does not make sense at all.Kwame Nkrumah's arch enemies, the United States and Britain who subverted him and made a number of assassination attempts on his life, used Kotoka and Afrifa to overthrow his legitimate government finally. Now,it is interesting to note that the same Americans and British are now ashamed and have recognized him as the greatest African who lived within the past 1000 years. They now call him AFRICA'S MAN OF THE MILLINEUM.Nkrumah has been vindicated.

It is in the military field that the man distinguished himself. It may not have been easy to plan and execute a coup against Nkrumah who had become very security conscious at the time. There were several attempts on his life and having gathered so much power in his person, he needed all the security support he could create. His personal guard was very strong and well armed. Yet Kotoka and Afrifa were able to outmaneuver them. Ok, they may have had some CIA support but on a purely military basis it was good. Nothing like that had happened in Ghana before. Kotoka served on the UN mission in Congo but they were not involved in any combat.
The 1966 coup was bad politically but as a purely military operation it succeeded. That is why Kotoka needs an honour that is military, not civilian like the airport. Remember Hitler fought a bad and unjust war but on a purely tactical basis, his generals at the beginning of the war were superb master tacticians and soldiers.
So name a military barracks after Kotoka, not even a street light. He did nothing apart from a coup.

Iam not a Ghanian, but a northern Nigerian. From all indications this writer is a liar and an ill-informed illitrate. He mentioned Murtala Muhammad as vilian where as the world over respect Murtala Muhammad for his vanguard role liberating countries like mozanbque and facilitating the demise of apatheid in South Africa. His OAU speech Africa Has Come of Age which sent shivers in the spines of the imperialists is still remebered as classic anti-imperialists critique. But it seems tribalism and religious bigotry has affected every african country. This unfounded insults on Murtala is being trade by those who hate his ethnic background. These silly misguided tribalist will haul insults at anyone who does not belong to their tribe and at the same time claim that their unjustified villification has nothing to do with tribalism. But lack of evidence and the lies in their comments betray their mean tribal motive.

What is in a name? This writer is claiming not to be a tribalist yet he did not give a single good reason why Nkrumahs mane must replace another name. He said it will bring development. How can mere name change the fate of Ghana. Mr man stop being a silly tribalist. Nkrumah was a dictator who wished to rule for life. He interfared with the internal affairs of other countries in Africa like the sponsoring og coup in Nigeria. He also marginalised other Ghanian tribes by giving most of the important appointments to his tribal kinsmen and siting most of the projects for development in his tribal areas. He is a friend to Mobutu, kamuzu Banda etc we have seen how this old gizzards destroyed their ccountries after living for so long ruling. Had Nkrumah lived lond he will no doubt be like his friends who began as heroes of independence but stayed so long and became wicked dictators.
