OKATAKYIE SARPONG, thanks for this reasonable piece. Sadly, the NDC Government has its hands in the ear. Statements from President Mahama, Hannah Tetteh, Haruna Iddrisu and Rashid Pelpuo appear that the NDC Government is all for the EPA.
Agreeing to such trade deals like EPA should be based on Cost-Benefit Analyses. The way the EPAs are formulated and negotiated are clearly not in the economic interests of Ghana/ECOWAS. The impact analyses on the EPA have shown that Ghana stand to lose more, while the gains/benefits are at best speculative or limited. The EPAs are driven mainly by EU's economic interests.
Ghana will lose out on tariff income, and because of the trade/economic imbalance between Ghana and the EU, the reciprocal trade liberalisation will hurt our developing economy. There will be negative impact on our local agriculture production, and small manufacturing industries.
Ghana and ECOWAS should be looking at other fast-growing emerging markets and trading blocs, with better preferential access which do not necessarily require the reciprocal liberalisation of our market.

people will sign deals good or bad for kick-backs. This is sad. We need deals we can benefit from. If we cannot benefit from a deal, then it is a no deal.

Our leaders who have been elected to think for us either refuse to think and rather wait for the West to think for them.As long as our leaders continue to go to the Bretton Woods institutions we should forget about being masters of our own destiny. The worst the NDC government can do to the good people of Ghana is to sign on to this EPA treaty. Let our leaders for once put on their thinking caps and decide on what is good for mother Ghana and West Africa. Let the EU get away with their baits because we are presently economically challenged and rather take steps to look elsewhere both within the sub-region and even to the East who better understand the machinations of the West because they have ever experienced same treatment from them but were strong enough to develop home-brewed policies that have now taken them out of the woods. Posterity will not forgive Mahama's administration if they sign on to this neo-colonialist policy.

But you know? The records show that the Fantes on the coast, as the main factors in the Gold Coast, made more money than you the Asantes from the sale but they don't brag about it.
