The writer was using the unmasking and retirement of Anas as an imagery to comment on the wider systemic problems that Anas' revelations are a reflection of. The writer is not saying literally that Anas should be unmasked because he (Anas) did something wrong. He is saying, simply put, that the fight against corruption in our society should go far beyond the efforts of Anas. Other authorities should take over from Anas. It is in that sense that he talks of the retirement of Anas. AND IT IS A VERY GOOD ARGUMENT HE HAS MADE!!!

Kudos, Eric. Well argued and well written. I've read most of the commentaries on the Anas issue and I think yours is one of the best. Some readers will misunderstand you. They will think you are against Anas and what I've seen on ghanaweb is that people don't want anybody to say anything negative about Anas. So they will think that is what you are doing but I don't think it's what you are saying.
You are looking beyond Anas. You are looking to the things we can do to fight this problem that are built on the exposés Anas made. You are talking about the institutional changes that are needed. You made the correct observation that 10 years of Anas' exposés have hardly made a dent into this widespread problem. Ten more years of Anas will still only produce individuals whose discomfiture provides Hollywood entertainment to Ghanaian viewers but which action will hardly make any systemic changes that will bring about real change. And I think you are right.
You also made mention of the particular problems that Anas' efforts face: the danger to his personal life, the one man private campaign, and, most important, the fact that Anas' methods releases murderers and armed robbers into society while denying justice, and hence succor, to the victims of the released criminals. It is different, if it is state authorities doing this, rather than a private individual or the citizen vigilante.
The only thing I would have loved you to comment on is how to deal with the inefficiency of the state institutions charged to do the work that would have made Anas unnecessary. That is the bane of the problem. As you so eloquently pointed out, we human beings will never change our attitudes to something from which we benefit. And so, we must be made/forced to change those attitudes. And it is the state institutions, rather than the actions of individual citizens, that will make us change. That is what happened in the developed countries that a low on the corruption index today. The citizens didn't change their attitudes on their own. They were forced to. It took a long time but they have come a long way. We seem to be making no progress at all - Anas or no Anas.

Very well said papa Eric. It's time we all stop the hypocritical tendencies we exhibit anytime a new Anas video pops up and work diligently to root the systemic corruption in Gh.

His emphasis was on something else - the fight against corruption BEYOND Anas! He made it clear that Anas is just one person fighting against corruption. One person can do only so much. The authorities should do much much more.
Read the piece again and understand what the writer is saying.

It's undeniable that Anas had made a positive impact on curbing corruption. It must take a judge a hardened heart to open his arms to bribery as used to be the case. Let's encourage more of Anas.
