CEGENSA erred in misspelling her name, and she should have taken it up with them, fine, but ever since this incident, I see no attempt of Ama Ata Aidoo to apologise to those who sacrificed their time to come and attend the event just to honour her. They were not members opf CEGENSA, nor had they anything to do with the blunder and yet were treated by Ama as if they had nothing to do with their time.

Concerned Citizen,
You have a valid point there!
By leaving the event before it started, the distinguished Professor herself needlessly compounded the error. As a result, she deprived the "innocent" audience, including the young student's who could have learned some very useful lessons from her, and she, the Professor, from them, the opportunity for mutual reflection and learning.
There are no two ways about that, period!
We, for instance, long forgot about that naming convention. But, would that imply that we are any less respectful of the Professors' achievements for herself, and for Ghana?
Or that, we are mediocre, in comparison?
We do not think so!
Alternatively, we could also argue that the same lack of attention to detail that is the source of the error and anguish is also the same one responsible for getting the Professor to the event site on the day of the event when she herself had responsibility to review a copy of the event program before that day.
Or, is it the case the Professor had previously drawn the attention of event organizers to the error?
Thus far, we've not heard anyone make that point, despite all the bravado and misplaced outrage by so many people about this matter, of Ghanaian culture, properly understood.
Needless to say, we have nothing but respect for Ms. Audrey Gadzekpo's for this brilliant exposition of commonsense and the reflective power of the mind.
Surely, the audience mattered.
Well done, Ms. Audrey Gadzekpo!

I understand your takes on this, and I recommend you for this very enlightening comment. But this is just giving her too much credit; do you think she is intelligent enough to see from your perspective? If she was, we would not be here talking about trivial little "t" added to someone's name that was exploded out of proportions.
There are times I like to believe the black person's regard for him/herself is anchored in disdain, cynicism over bloated ego. Otherwise, this lady who continues to draw great respect from us all wouldn't be disrespecting compatriots for the errors due to others.
Most of us have our names misspelt not by novices but big state agents elsewhere in this world even though those people have in front of then documents bearing your full name. You ask how that could have happen, some in front of you as you wait, with your IDs in front of them. You become frustrated, because to err is human; it means errors are bound to happen. It doesn't entail grudging with a population, so you let sleeping dogs like and move on as you ask for correction next time.
Ama Ata Aidoo has betrayed her wisdom, and she must henceforth understand that she did worse than those who misspelt her name. But this kind of thing is in the Ghanaian blood: TOO KNOWN.

She could've chastised the organizers In private,BUT Jovially educate the audience on the correct spellings of her names. It was a missed opportunity for her. Mistake in name spelling and pronunciation happen daily, hers was not an unique situation and she could have treated it with grace. EGO played a role in this in my opinion. Her "mentees"( these young writers) deserve to experience her humility through a public apology or statement on this issue. That's if she cares enough.

The woman Ama Ata Aidoo has failed everybody, She has not demonstrated maturity at all. l guess the emotion she has not been able to manage privately is what has exposed her publicly. I am sorry, I don't think the most uneducated in our society today would bring this humiliation to an institution and her good self. Perhaps she taught she was humiliating the institution Legon and event planners, but has brought the biggest humiliation to herself and family. Finally, we must know that, we are humans, we are not God, no one is perfect except God, Therefore mistakes may abound in our endeavours, we must therefore be compassionate to forgive but in this case Ama Ata Aidoo whom i would not entitle ''Prof'' here has brought a disgraced to herself.

How do you teach a people who are reckless in their disposition and lack attention to detail? Let's face it, we Ghanaians are predisposed to lackadaisical attitude and carelessness without giving much thought to the things we do. There are men and women of letters in our society who have reached the threshold of competency and are distinguished in their areas of endeavours the world over. But in our own country, we refer to them as "booklong" because we either do not understand them or envy their success, or both.
Any Ghanaians with brains or mental acuity would have to ask the question: Why would Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo walk out in an occasion where she was an invited guest? The prudent answer to the question would be, she had warned the organizers of the event concerning the spelling of her name before hand, and may have probably spelt it for them during the invitation. I was not there, and not privy to any information, but common sense tells me this is exactly what occurred on that fateful event. Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo may have contended this same issue over and over again in our society and elsewhere for her to react in the way she reacted, because there is no other explanation.
Our whole Ghanaian society must look at itself in a mirror and make a change (to quote from Michael Jackson of blessed memory), because there is too much complacency and careless inclination in the Ghanaian psyche. We are not a very serious people!!!

Instead of learning from people in society who through dint of hard work, rob shoulders with their counterparts around the globe, we euphemistically label them as "too known" and shut them down. The should be a paradigm shift in the average Ghanaian mindset if we want mature into an advanced and civilized nation.
Misspelling your guest's name is scandalous in many civilized countries, and yet the Ghanaian bereft of all decency is downplaying this faux pas without shame.

Nii, I like you a lot, and urge you to control your anger when debating the issues. This is a forum for ideas, not a contest by any stretch of the imagination. We don't come here to win at all cost; rather, we come here to deliberate issues. All you have to do is to say your piece without rancour.
You are absolutely right, I speculated on the reasonability of Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo's reaction to the misspelling of her name, and concluded that the only reason the Prof. could have reacted the way she did, would be to have warned the organizers the importance of getting her name right, and may have even spelled it for them.
Is the premise of this assumption right or wrong? You could have argued against the premise and suggested your own. Yes, you are right, we all make mistakes but not when you have been specifically warned ahead of time. So the premise of my argument is that Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo warned the organizers of the function against misspelling her name. The conclusion; organizers ignored her warning and misspelled her name, and Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo walked out of the function.
Nii, you have to determine if the premise of my argument is logical, and if it is, then is my conclusion also logical? Nii, here is the point, human nature is the predictor of all human actions. Agreed? For instance, if someone attacks you and wants to cut off your head, you would have no choice but to defend yourself. In the same vein, if you warn someone against something you do not like, the person goes ahead and does it despite your warning, you would have every right to react, and how you react is basically the choice you have.
This was the basis of my proposition , and that is,Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo couldn't have walked out of the meeting unless she had warned the organizers of getting her name spelled right. Tell me if this is logical or not.

This misspelling of names has become cancerous in Ghanaian life. From the making of birth certificates to passports and even on schools has become a neglected phenomenon that some times become worried and wonder that are people or those in authority not observing what i was perceiving as a deliberate act or carelessness. You send the correct names to make birth certificate or would come out names spelt wrongly or differently. In fact, I very much love what Prof. Ama At Audio has done. At least it has attracted attention and wide coverage. People would be alert that it is not a pleasant thing to carelessly spell ones name wrong for that matter even a legal document like the birth certificate. Currently, my son, s name has been constantly spelt wrong at the university primary school, Legon. My wife complained and l even exploded shouted out this is not acceptable. I am yet to come to terms with them. At the passport office is not left out the same problem persist and I use to say if these people can not take their time to simply spell nemes correctly then what are they doing in such high esteem offices? Such people should not be allowed to work there,if you continue to spell names wrongly at birth certificate issuing offices then you must be removed there. For Pro. To walk out she is not registering the unacceptable behaviour on her only but on the general unacceptable behaviour that has found acceptable and continuous to strive. If she did not do it for all who else, and who would even listen. Ayikoo, Pro. Ama At Audio, you have fought a good fight for all of us. A fight that was fought in our hearts though no one heard us.

You see, it's easy to ask someone to stay focused when they type but if that was easy, you'd not be debating this issue right now.
There are times you become surprised you misspelt something after having been cocksure you didn't make any mistakes. You'd have read over the word 100 times and may never spot it until later. Which explains the adage "To err is human". It is never going to end tomorrow.
Ama Ata Aidoo is just ghanaianly arrogant and "too known" as we say in Ghana. Who is she better than in Ghana. Her success is not everyone's, and that's just a point. When people cherished and encouraged you in life, you learn to respect them, especially when we're from the same society. It doesn't take anything away from you academic achievements.
