Parents were imprisoned because their sons and daughter were listening in and informing leaders of the young pioneers with the stories. Some parents were jailed.

MY GRANDMOTHER SAID OPPONENTS OF NKRUMAH MAINLY TRADERS AND IMPORTERS WHO WERE BRINGING IN SAME PRODUCTS FROM THE WEST WOULD ORDER LARGE QUANTITIES OF THE LOCAL MATCHES, STORE THEM IN WAREHOUSES NEAR THE BEACH IN JAMES TOWN FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS, THEN RELEASE THEM UNTO THE MARKET, STORING THE MATCH NEAR THE SEA FOR THAT LONG RENDERED THEM USELESS, THEREBY DESTROYING THE MATCH FACTORY! WHEN CHARMAIN MAO OF CHINA DEVELOPED HIS 50 YEARS PLAN FOR CHINA HE WAS GIVING HIS CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN THE PATH TO FOLLOW TO PROGRESS, WHAT DO WE SEE OF CHINA NOW AFTER CHAIRMAN MAO'S DEATH? 40 YEAR DEVELOPMENT PLAN CAN NEVER BE SET IN A STONE, MEANING IT CAN BE VARIED AS WE MOVE ALONG, BUT IT GUIDES US TO SEE TO BUILDING OUR CAPACITY IN ALL AREAS THAT ARE VERY VITAL TO OUR PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT, ALL OF THESE VITAL AREAS HAS ALREADY BEEN IDENTIFIED BY KWAME NKRUMAH. Lee Kwan Yew of Singapore was a tyrant as well, just as Dr. Nkrumah and incarcerated his political rivals just as Nkrumah did. Yet today Singapore is light years ahead of Ghana in every in all macroeconomic indices. Comparing Singapore and Ghana is like comparing day and night, all because while one leader, Lee Kwan Yew dealt ruthlessly with political opponents in his country to achieve his goals, the other leader, Nkrumah, was soft on saboteurs and coup plotters that stood between him and the development of our country.
Today there are more millionaires per capita in Singapore than the rest of the world besides being the cleanest city state in the world. I prefer a tyrant as leader who can eradicate poverty and create millionaires to democratic suckers who come to power to steal from the people.
To compare Nkrumah's Ghana to North Korea and Cuba belies your faulty misconception of nation building in pre east and west divide. I blame Dr. Nkrumah for not dealing ruthlessly with the saboteurs and nation wreckers.

WE SAY: We agree!
You see that same crass, ignorant, and abusive language against us further down.
And so, we move on!
In addition, we will take your critique of the "soft approach" of Nkrumah to subversives with a mighty grain of salt. Hindsight, they say, is 20/20.
When mighty nations sought to achieve its own strategic interests, and practically allowed rogue agents to do whatever they wanted as long as those interests were protected, there was not much a new nation on that corner of the world could do to remain independent.
Not for too long.
However, 50-plus years later, Ghanaians ain't got no excuse.
It ain't got nothing to do with Kwame Nkrumah.
In fact, but for Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana would most likely be a lot worse than we find today.
So, let's re-think, review, re-consider. Let's accept that as a baseline for civil/cordial discourse about these matters.
It is too important for so many reasons, not to!
We have an essay coming up this weekend on these same pages, never published, ever, detailing how a prominent member of the CPP, Komla Gbedemah, using public, international, and his own resources, was actually coordinating with Busia to undermine Ghana's independence to the benefit of the UK and the US.
Lee Kwan Yew, as we've said before, never had that type of unprecedented opposition. At bottom, the location of Singapore had a lot more strategic importance to Gbedemah's sponsors.
Greetings!

After all these years, this CIA 'fake news' still continues unabated. I was a member of the Young Pioneers and I don't ever remember being conditioned to report my parents or any other person to the authorities to be jailed or tortured.
I remember during the Coup de tat, a grizzly DRAWING of a fake god named KANKAN NYAME worshiped by Kwame Nkrumah was published in the news papers inciting the hypocritical Ghanaian religious public to want to burn him alive if they laid their hands on him.
One fact most people do not know about Nkrumah was that he was very religious and almost became a Roman Catholic Priest but for his rebellious spirit. He encouraged Christian and Muslim religious instructions in all Schools from Primary to High Schools. Yet this 'kankan nyame' meaning 'stinking god' image was concocted as a propaganda tool to lower Nkrumah to the status of a devil and bamboozle the innocent mind of the confused African.
Well, with this FAKE NEWS PROPAGANDA still alive, it appears Nkrumah's ghost is still haunting the UP-NPP machinations to destroy all political opposition and keep in power for ever. Let's grow up folks for, the SANKOFA symbol teaches us a valuable history lesson in retrieving the discarded GOLDEN EGG for hatching to progress. Like we used to say in the good old Young Pioneers: NKRUMAH NEVER DIES and good deeds are never lost.

I was never a member of the Young Pioneers nor the Scout thugh my father wanted me to join one, though I, in fact, all of us, coveted very much their red tie. We had deposited money for the supply of the ties to all pupils when the coup occurred.
Anyway, I guess I was just too much of a free spirit to be subjected to the kind of discipline I saw them instilling in members at close range, as both used to meet on our school compound and the Scouts used to march under our cocoa plantation just by the school. Occasionally, the Scouts would give us a chase when we stayed behind after school playing cards or that game with those black seeds we made round sand basin to role them into. Can't even remember the Ewe name. Damn! Now, I think it is called "atoklui". Or playing "alo koto".
However, from my vantage family connections, I can say that I knew very much about the Young Pioneers. I can say categorically that none of them were indoctrinated to report parents in Anloga; or anywhere. Not a single person detained from Anloga - and the town provided more detainees than any other town in Ghana, with my maternal side at one time providing as many as 6 or 7 - were reported by Young Pioneers. We knew who reported them, as even the Djabanor C'ttee found out. The Report is there for all to check. There is even a bigger report on those detentions. It is therefore mere concoction and propaganda that YPs were reporting being trained to parents.
However, if an innocent child over heard the parents saying some negatove things about the CPP or Nkrumah and reported it without any prodding, how can this be blamed on the YP Movt? After all, kids in the West often call the Police and Child Protection Units to report their parents who disciplined them, thanks to things told them in school.
A Ghanaian father found himself in hot soup years back in Norway for bathing the daughter and stupidly washing her private part the way Ghanaian women do (ok, I am an experrt on that too, you pervert reading this:-))! Phew! It took a lot of explaining to get him off the mess he found himself in.

Kasavubu,
By your analysis, we can conclude that "Kankan Nyame" was actually a smear on Kwame Nkrumah, after his overthrow, after he got to Guinea.
Here is someone one's account:
"...The cartoonists also set to work giving us vivid depictions of the horrors of the man’s regime. They drew him as a vampire bat feeding on the blood of Ghanaians. There was Nkrumah kneeling at the shrine of Kankan Nyame. A very popular one was that in which he asked us to tighten our belts from 1957 to 1966 and ghanaman had done that until he became emaciated. These drawings were made into black and white photos and sold all over the country. Grown-up people bought these photos and were looking at them and feeling satisfied. They showed them to us children too and we also looked at them. And everybody was laughing at Kwame Nkrumah..." (Kofi Amenyo, Feature: That day when Nkrumah was overthrown. Published On: August 22, 2010, 00:00 GMT (MYJOYONLINE))
Yes, Kankan is a city in Guinea. But, it was all a smear.
Or, maybe let's all ask Cameron Duodu, when he sat in London and wrote all that nonsense glorifying all those coup ploters and the power of their magic, way back then...
READ MORE: "...Fellow countrymen, if Kwame Nkrumah really believed in gods and idols then let us hear what he Osagyefo had to say in one of his books quoted by Michael Gyamerah on (page 105 of Dark Days In Ghana):
"A particularly nauseating part of the smear campaign was the putting of a dead woman and child into a refrigerator at Flagstaff House, saying that this was 'Kwame Nkrumah's juju', and inviting public inspection. The woman and child were among those murdered on 24 th February. But the public turned the open invitation to Flagstaff House into a kind of pilgrimage and the inspection offer had to be quickly withdrawn".
Contrary to claims by Nkrumah's opponents, it is the UP/NPP tradition that is superstitious and obsessed with "juju". Nothing is more revealing than the account in the London Observer from Cameron Duodu their correspondent after the coup describing the assassination of Major-General Barwah in the 1966 coup:
"When Colonel Kotoka's troops got to General Barwah's house, he was already in uniform and armed with a pistol. He tried to shoot Colonel Kotoka and the newborn legend has it that Colonel Kotoka, who is well versed in juju magic collected the pellets as they flew and threw them back at General Barwah. One of Colonel Kotoka's men meanwhile riddled General Barwah with machine-gun bullets".
As Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah pointed out in "Dark Days In Ghana" (page 22):
"When the counter coup of April 1967 took place Kotoka's 'magic' could not save him. Unlike Barwah he surrounded without protest or struggle to those who had captured him at his headquarters. His 'juju' did not prevent him being shot in his turn"..."
Peace and LearN, we must say!

WE SAY: The shame is that the writer does not identify what country that clergyman came from. In the context of Kwame Nkrumah's Ghana of the latter 1950s, early-1960s, that would be important. That action was exactly what independent sovereign states are supposed to do.
ABOUT SCOUTING: The writer merely mentions Scout, but does not seem to understand its relevance to the Gold Coast, Ghana. Some of the more survival principles were actually developed in the Gold Coast, by Baden Powell in the early 1900s. (www.ghanascout.org/page-31).
That Kwame Nkrumah and the CPP people would seek to train youths in discipline, service to nation, survival, governance, etc., was not such an aberration given what even so-called "democratic countries" were doing with not only their children, but also with grown adults.

There is nothing wrong with training our children in all the above...and indeed, we Danquists are willing and able to train the youth in these values for nation building.
But what Prof. Lungu and the Nkrumaist cronies fail to mention is that The Young Pioneers became Nkrumah's Little Birds (in The Game of Thrones) who were snitching on their parents within the context of Nkrumah's fascist regime. To this pack of toxic breed, Nkrumah never died; Nkrumah does no wrong!
So they served not the nation but their god Nkrumah and his totalitarian regime. They still can never think well!
That is why we unreservedly condemn the Young Pioneer notion as construed by Nkrumah and his cronies.
Fortunately, Nkrumah, his ideology and his party are all dead and gone as I correctly predicted here some time ago. Those Young Pioneer breeds will, luckily for our country, soon die off.
Today, it is the democratic principles of Osagyefo Dr. J. B. Danquah, as exemplified by Osagyefo President Akufo-Addo, that are guiding our great nation on to the path of progress and prosperity.
Kwame Nkrumah and his fascism are dead forever! So live with it!!

That is to say while the Young Pioners did not go seeking what the government can do for them or where their next meal will come from, the NPP and NDC foot soldiers are a bunch of aimless vagabonds and hooligans led by a few party manipulators and puppet masters willing to use those brain dead foot soldiers willing to die for meaningless party causes?
It's interesting, to me at the very least, that for over 50+ years we've come just a short distance in development, while we have created a few elite class of rich people in Ghana who stole from the country to become rich, would not know how to get their ivory filled heads out of brown paper bags to save themselves from suffocating while their lackies at worthless media houses promote ananse stories. If Nkrumah did not carve out a constitutional exemptions for himself, and for his institutions at a time people charactized him to be the evil dictator then why would the NPP and the NDC claiming to practice democracy have a history of more dead bodies, human misery not to mention corrupt institutions that starts with journalists, parliament, the courts and office of the president than Nkrumah ever did?
To date there is nothing the evil dictator Nkrumah put in place that is not practiced to the max in the USA, UK, Canada and civilized nations across Western Europe.
